According to this the descent time is supposed to be about two hours. They lost contact around 1hr 45 minutes. Found in the vicinity of the Titanic wreck (a few hundred meters away).

I think it's a fair assumption that the pressure caused it to fail at that point and it would have been instant.

I think the thought of people slowly dying in the dark was horrific and unbearable to think about.
