City 4 clear of the goblins over the park, United can go 6 clear of them if they beat Fulham

For us, we stay 6 clear of Villa but they have the game on Saturday against the Horse Punchers so can cut that gap to 3 with a win

Absolute nonsense interpretation on BT. The "law" of deliberate action is meant to cover defender backpasses being intercepted - it's not meant to excuse an attacker coming up on the blind side of a defender in an offside position, as that's clearly an advantage.

Another law completely open to interpretation - very likely would have been given offside had it have been for Villa.

Sorry mate, can't agree. I'd be absolutely livid if that was my centreback, pissing about with it like that.

  • A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent.
A ‘save’ is when a player stops, or attempts to stop, a ball which is going into or very close to the goal with any part of the body except the hands/arms (unless the goalkeeper within the penalty area).

In situations where:

  • a player moving from, or standing in, an offside position is in the way of an opponent and interferes with the movement of the opponent towards the ball this is an offside offence if it impacts on the ability of the opponent to play or challenge for the ball; if the player moves into the way of an opponent and impedes the opponent's progress (e.g blocks the opponent) the offence should be penalised under Law 12
------------

That's the rule.

The first bullet point addresses backpasses intercepted from defence.

The second bullet point covers what we've seen tonight.

Controls the ball intended for an offside player. The minute he engaged that play...he's offside.
Take a look at my post on page 1831. But if you can't be bothered, look at this. Look at the cut of the grass in front of the City & Villa players, and then reference the City player with the two full backs. They are both nearer their own goal line than the City player. Ergo, the City player had moved back to an onside position at the point when he block-tackled the ball. That is onside...
Man City goal v Villa.webp
