Controls the ball intended for an offside player. The minute he engaged that play...he's offside.
......is the correct answer. These officials these days they’re utterly clueless. Rodri is offside as the ball is headed forward, he then tackles Mings. That is as clear an offside as you’ll see. The game now is not the one I learnt the rules of.

Take a look at my post on page 1831. But if you can't be bothered, look at this. Look at the cut of the grass in front of the City & Villa players, and then reference the City player with the two full backs. They are both nearer their own goal line than the City player. Ergo, the City player had moved back to an onside position at the point when he block-tackled the ball. That is onside...

I have no clue what you're talking about mate - the lad is coming from a position 20 yards offside when the ball is played, which is when offside actually is measured; not when it arrives to the intended target.

That screenshot means the square sum of sod all.

So....a striker can sit off near the keeper all game then tackle a defender to win the ball back? That what we're saying?
If the defender is unaware of the player, yes.

You guys do realise offside is about the attacking team playing the ball, right? Not to protect against errors by the defending team.

This "phase of play" bullcrap does my head in. What defines the start and end of a "phase of play" -- is it when possession switches from one team to the other? If so, that would imply ball control, not simply a touch. Mings had control of the ball, which should therefore indicate a new "phase of play" and also mean Rodri is no longer offside when he dispossesses him. Had Mings simply touched the ball, Rodri was offside.

It is though. That's been offside for as long as you care to mention.

What's happened is the officials have got substantially worse and/or more corrupt, and VAR is aiding it.

  • A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent.
A ‘save’ is when a player stops, or attempts to stop, a ball which is going into or very close to the goal with any part of the body except the hands/arms (unless the goalkeeper within the penalty area).

In situations where:

  • a player moving from, or standing in, an offside position is in the way of an opponent and interferes with the movement of the opponent towards the ball this is an offside offence if it impacts on the ability of the opponent to play or challenge for the ball; if the player moves into the way of an opponent and impedes the opponent's progress (e.g blocks the opponent) the offence should be penalised under Law 12
------------

That's the rule.

The first bullet point addresses backpasses intercepted from defence.

The second bullet point covers what we've seen tonight.
Villa player took the ball under control, new phase of play. Second bullet point didn’t happen

Yes, but did you look at the cut of the grass?!

Ridiculous rule of not flagging until the player has touched it,this season Everton have certainly lost possession throw ins and corners due clearing the ball out whilst a player was blatantly offside.
