Villa player took the ball under control, new phase of play. Second bullet point didn’t happen

It's not a new phase of play because the intended target is the player offside who challenges for the ball.

Give you an example - say there's a through ball, attacker a yard offside, but defender chases back, gets a touch first then the attacker nicks it off him.

The attacker is still offside as soon as he takes the ball. That happens every week.

I have no clue what you're talking about mate - the lad is coming from a position 20 yards offside when the ball is played, which is when offside actually is measured; not when it arrives to the intended target.

That screenshot means the square sum of sod all.

Once a player moves into an onside position, i.e. he has two or more opponents between him and the opposition goal line, he then becomes onside again. He is free to take part in the game again, surely? If that is not the case, then someone coming from an offside position would remain 'offside' for, how long? You tell me. 5 seconds, 10, 15, 20. When are they classed 'onside' again?

Is not offside measured against the last time a 'defender' plays the ball (i.e. the Villa outfield player)?

I think you're very confused as to what the discussion is about mate.
