Today’s Football 2020/21 Season

I genuinely believe you're in trouble. Though I am consistently wrong about these things
Not being sarcastic here; we’ve been in or on the edge of trouble since promotion in 2013, so that’s nothing new. That’s partly of our own making and party due to our resources compared to most of the others in the league .
We have a tough start and if we are worse than P7 W0 D0 L7 F0 A Loads Pts 0 (as we were in 2017) I’ll start to properly worry. Until then, enjoying the ride as usual, nothing else for it.

I figured you’d be more worried since you’ve got about 10 players this season.

I think it's more to do with 2 factors mate:
1) Hodgson and his ilk of manager are underrated
2) Viera underwhelmed a bit at Nice, and this is a harder job on paper.

To put some mitigation though, it probably felt the right time to make the "twist" call. It did feel Hodgson had gone as far as he could. As a club you seem to have a really clear idea of what you are trying to do, and I think Viera does fit that. I think of the 4 clubs who have replaced managers, and yourselves and Wolves have probably got guys who fit the brief pretty well. Ourselves and Spurs, probably less so (although Benitez is a reasonable follow on from where Ancelotti left us).

I also think, Viera may benefit from the rigidity that Hodgson had in place a bit like Martinez did here. He let's the handbrake go, but in a measured way, with the assurances that Hodgson has given them. You could get on a bit of a role.

Its tough for PL clubs, as at some point you feel you have to role that dice. I know Brighton did similar Houghton to Potter and nay only really see the benefit next summer. Fingers crossed it works out for Palace.

It's also hard, as people will turn their nose up at Viera, but English teams are probably not as appealing as people think. Like if Palace were in the Bundesliga, or Serie A or whatever, youd probably be on the cusp of European qualification. But in the PL there are just so many more wealthy clubs. Like Palace budget wise are probably not too dissimilar to say a Frankfurt, but it's just a much harder job here.

We have similar too. Like if we had our resources in any other league, I'd fancy us to push for CL, but in England we are big outsiders. It makes the league what it is really.

Thoughtful post. There has been a lot of noise around out of contract payers in terms of the sheer number of them but tbh there are a few old or sick notes in there (Dann, Wickham) or bad attitude ( Sakho) or just plain gash (Hennessy) plus the academy releases that it has really been overstated. The immediate future will be determined by two things; who we get in and how Vieira goes about building a team for the mid term.
We don’t know how lucky we are to have Parish & Co who have done an extraordinary job since they took over. We are in a group of clubs that are simultaneously on the verge of either breaking through or being relegated. I am more positive (just a little) that we’re nearer the former than the latter today.
But ask me again next week!lol

Overstated? According to this you have 18 first team players + whoever from the academy is any good.

Yes. Overstated. With regard to the loss of quality not quantity.

Oh quality isn't an issue but surely a squad that thin is a worry (at present).

Although I would say your only RB being Martin Kelly hints quality is still an issue in some areas.
I’m sure we are trying to bring in an RB or re sign either Ward or Clyne (who is still training with us). We also need a CB and have been closely linked with a couple and a DM. But it’s only July 9, our manager has been in place less than a week. Plus, last season I regularly read on these forums how rubbish our squad was and how we were doomed. Now we are doomed for trying to do something about it.
So;
1. We are having a clear out or over age / sick note players.
2. This might reasonably have been done earlier but circumstances meant that was extremely difficult and that paid off anyway (by staying in the Division)
3. We now have a new manager and work has already begun on getting some in and some out.
4. At this moment in time 5 weeks before the season starts we are a bit lighter in the squad than we would be ideally but given the above I think that’s understandable.
Therefore; has all the media babble of clearing out overage / sick note players been overstated? ( especially given last seasons non stop media babble about our overage / sick note squad)

You decide @Nymzee. :coffee:
