But deliberate fouls will still incur a red card.

Those include holding, pulling or pushing, not playing the ball, serious foul play, violent conduct or deliberate handball in order to deny a goalscoring opportunity.
Put simply: if you attempt to win the ball, be if you touch it or not, then it's not a sending off. Everything else is still an early bath.

Sorry ref, I didn't mean to disembowel the attacker in the penalty area. I went for the ball. So you can't send me off. Well OK, ref, he was clean through on goal. OK, ref, it is what you might call a clear goalscoring opportunity. But hey, come on, I attempted to win the ball. It just so happened I managed to take him out bollocks-high. Give a guy a break, ref!

Well that would constitute a dangerous tackle or professional foul, hence falling into the everything else category - i.e. a sending off.

Perhaps I should have gone into detail of obtaining the ball legitimately and provided all possible scenarios so it was simple for all to understand.

Sorry for that...

Carlos Tevez returned to Boca Juniors from Juventus due to home sickness, he has now left Boca Juniors for Shangai Shenua, £600,000 a week might make him feel less homesick ! :)
This is the guy who complained about the rain in Manchester when he was with Utd and promptly went to City for more money.
He then said he wanted to be nearer his family so moved to Turin. Which, to be fair, is about 70 miles nearer to Buenos Aires.

The point I'm making is that a player can go in for a ball quite innocently, yet still commit a foul. That applies to a lot of fouls - an honest attempt to win the ball, but the tackle is mis-timed, the player in possession is too clever for the opponent, and so on. But it doesn't reduce the fact of a foul. A lot of attempts to con the ref also goes on, as we all know. As I put in a previous post, Carragher got away for years with pretending to slip, collide, accidentally make contact with an opponent without conceding a penalty. And don't get me started on his last-minute challenge in the 6-yard box in the Clattenberg derby... He then mentored the screaming skull to do the same at Analfield.

Monk doing brilliant at Leeds. Don't like them really, but their place is in the Premier League. Would be good to see them back.
