Todd Boehly. A man...who wants an all-star game.

Nothing turns a bunch of working and middle class leftists into hidebound Tories faster than someone trying to change the football in any way

The problem with an 'All Star' football game is that it's supposed to be a showcase of talent in its guise in US sports. Now I don't watch NFL / NHL / MLB all star games but I do watch NBA when I can.

NBA have faced issues recently where they've had to change the format of the game and how the scoring is done to make them interesting and competitive, they've also had to give big (not ridiculous) bonuses to players to get them to play in the All Star game, players would rather take the rest / not risk injury.

Those would be massive hurdles for football on their own.

Back to the showcase element, it's very very easy to do that on a basketball court. Defense drops off, players don't put in lots of effort so it's easy for players to throw up a few half court shots or do nice dunks on a fast break etc. Football is completely different. It's very hard to artificially create a wow moment, what would happen the ref gives generous free kicks so KDB can try a 30 yard rabona free kick? Or defenders drop off so Mo Salah can try an overhead kick from the edge of the area - which of course he wouldn't try incase he got injured trying something stupid. Imagine seeing Bernado Silva doing a bunch of step overs and tricks and ghosting past a defender, but he hasn't done that because he's fooled the defender it's because the defender has put in zero effort. It would look crap and completely unnatural from a footballing perspective.

It would basically be like a glorified Soccer Aid.

They have a different sporting culture over there and stuff like this wows the locals in the US but doesn’t fly here.

They don’t have relegation or promotion so it’s francises and not a meritocracy it’s design to make money.

Plus US sports do not in general have an international calendar so plenty of spare time for sommit like this, here we got too many games already

Americans need to keep their nose out of our sports, by all means try to play it - but don't mess with it.

Can you imagine the outrage if a brit went over there, bought the New York Yankees and tried telling the Yanks where they're going wrong?

Exactly.

It's too bad the international calendar is stuffed with Nations League now. Using a friendly to raise money for non-league might actually work.

But is it a game that we would want to watch though ?

Seems like something star struck yanks would watch so how much would it really generate?

As a lifelong New York Mets fan, I would love this tbh ?.
Come on over, Mike Ashley

This is a great idea imo. I think the English fans who are against this, are pretty stubborn and backwards and it's no wonder why football is so backwards on so many things such as introduction of basic technology such as VAR.

The revenue of the top 4 American sports league generates far more than the Premier League, even the NHL generates more revenue so no, that logic doesn't work unless the British league are generating more money.

Talking gash as usual mate

The premier league has generated €7.1bn for the 22/23 season whilst the NHL for 2022 has just reached the $5bn due to a huge increase in rights from ESPN so with the current exchange rate there is a $2bn difference in the EPL’s favour and that a conservative estimate.

The link above suggests that the EPL’s true worth is just under $10bn which puts it roughly on a par with NBA and MLB.

For the NFL then you are talking some $17.5bn which would be just under all revenue generated by the 7 major leagues in Europe which is apt considering the size of the US is basically the size of continental Europe
