Cleverley just looks like a player who is to scared to make a mistake. From the games I've seen of him it looks like he's shitting himself when someone plays him the ball or he has to go for a header or something like that. Also doesn't help when he knows a vast amount of people don't wanna see him on the field or that petition to never play for England or whatever it was, his confidence must be shot and he's probably not even enjoying people on the field.

The choices so far in this thread or Cleverly, Arteta or Rodwell......

My god.
Thankfully none of us know a damn thing.

I would hope we'd get some sexy continental. Probably pick up a boss Irish though.

We shouldn't be buying loads of squad filler either, we should be buying for the first XI and letting current first XI become squad filler. So let's all take a step back and go back to FIFA and not come back with names rated under 78, ok?

I remember back when Cleverly was indisputably better than Henderson.
One has developed into a starting midfield player for the title contenders, the other has stagnated.
I imagine Martinez could do some good work with him- and if we're playing in Europe with many more fixtures I for one would not be against him joining the squad (for the right price)

Cleverly is actually not that bad a player, the problem is he has been asked to play a role that hes not confident doing.

remember we all cried when gibson came here

remember the majority of us moaned that we spunked £13mbon McCarthy

I'd take cleverly over rodwell, as long as barry was tied up as well.

One thing is for certain - I was wrong on James McCarthy, thought he'd be OK but take time to bed in and would be a decent squad player at best. Martinez nailed that signing and then some. He also brought in Barry which was another colossal central midfield signing, and had the foresight to realise Fellaini wouldn't fit into his system - a fantastic player, but that's a fair shout and we did well to get rid in retrospect.

So, if we did sign Cleverley, despite my strong misgivings about it, I'd have to accept that Martinez has shown an aptitude equally Moyes, if not better, in the transfer market in relation to central midfielders, and it'd be very foolish of anyone to not give him the benefit of the doubt here.

Everton signed Howard, Gibson or Saha because they weren't good enough for United, so that's not a point for me.

In Gibson and Saha's case, injuries were a big factor, it wasn't a straight forward case of them not being good enough, didn't work out for Howard but that happens a lot to younger keepers early on in their careers, especially when they dont get a regular run in the team.................my point is that Cleverly just doesn't look good enough, irrespective of who he plays for

I'd rather we spent what money we had on players further up the pitch really, but I'm sure if Martinez brought him in he'd get more out of him. With more confidence any player would improve. Look at Ramsey this season compared to other years.

We do need at least one defensive midfielder - reliance on Barry and McCarthy is cripplingly obvious (see the Palace game for details!)

Not for me, too much of a crab, sideways, sideways sideways...

And would rather spend on someone more attacking in midfield, if we get Barry then there's no need for him with Gibson about too...
