.... but you sort of get where I'm coming from?

No, not at all. Wish I did but I don't. He shown himself to be a fantastic dictator of pace in a game, had an eye for a pass and intelligence on and off the ball.

He's made of glass and it's fine to critique his fitness levels and dismiss him as an option based on that, but not on his ability in my view.

difference is though if the same things were said about McCarthy this time last year then they were incorrect as he consistently performed well for Wigan, he's upped his game another level since he's come to us but its not as if he's gone from being poor to excellent - Cleverly has simply been extremely bad for Man Utd, cant see how anyone can argue against that
That was exactly my point.

Cleverly for Wigan under Berto was outstanding. And even when on loan to Watford before that he was brilliant.
TBF he has played poorly this season but he was just a scape goat in UTD's poor season.
I rate cleverly but believe he has to be in the right environment to play in. Might be an undisguised coup for us if we get him. Mark my words. But in saying that, I wouldnt spend more than $5M on him.

If he can play at his best for us like in this match and be consistent, he will become a key player.

Fair points.

Do think what you've seen at Man Utd is a misnomer though. True to an extent for England, how many players display their best for England?

Anyway - Alex Ferguson and Roberto Martinez rate him - the latter publicly backed him not so long ago. I recall he looked a different player alongside McCarthy at Wigan, he could be a different player at us.
If he signs I hope you're right, but even then, I reckon we could get far far better midfielders for what he'd cost.

Depends on the price.

Would be fine for a lowish fee in my opinion. Not going to worry if we spend more though.

Never thought McCarthy or Barry were worth anything before this year. I clearly know nothing.

His contract is expiring next season. He won't cost much, maybe we can get him for something like 5M, which would be a very good business.

I wouldn't consider 5 million good business ,500k for Gibson is what I consider good business.

If we had to get cleverly I'd wait for his contract to run out

Everton signed Howard, Gibson or Saha because they weren't good enough for United, so that's not a point for me.

I'd consider 5m for him a pretty reasonable deal tbh. Him and McCarthy together would work well. Depends what other options are available to us tbh though.
