He wont turn into Osman mark 2 because he hasnt got good quick feet and doesnt score. He gets the ball and passes it 5 yards sideways exactly what martinez loves. If him and McCarthy play centre mid we wont get past the half way line. Seen him 30/40 times and he is dreadful player. Plus he runs kicks and dives like Beckham

Woah there.

Don't you dare.

Prefer to be linked with a decent front player to help Rom. Not another average midfielder. Cleverley is not a top 6 player which is what we should be looking for. Neither are kone alcatraz and mc Geady all who for some reason that Martinez believed are. We will find it very hard to attract decent players in the summer so I suppose it's the reality of a poor season that we are linked will average and some of our better performers are being linked with an exit.

Solid enough player for me. Think he was just massively hyped up when he broke into the United squad and was found at that high level.

He could easily turn into Osman mark 2.

And he's free.
People who complete passes successfully are always welcome and stats tend to suggest he's good at doing that. Of course, stats like that can often mask a poor player creatively speaking, but my recollections of him early in his United career are that he can add some punch to an attack.

I honestly dont see him being deployed by Martinez in CM, and his words quoted there are instructive in that he says that Cleverley is the one who feels he's best back there. I'd see him in a position on the left and being used in the same way that Martinez used Jordi Gomez at Swansea/Wigan - getting him in between opposition lines. More a successor to Pienaar than Barry.

or McCarthy gets sold to Chelsea.

I think McCarthy is overrated by Evertonians. Don't get me wrong, he is a good player, and quite easily our best midfielder (not difficult considering who he is up against), but he is nowhere near good enough to hold down a starting place at the likes of Chelsea or City. He has a brilliant engine on him but he isn't very creative at all, he seldom assists and he seldom scores goals. He is miles away from being as good as the likes of Fabregas etc.

Chelsea have surpassed the stage when they are paying ridiculous transfer fees for 'good' or average players (like Shaun Wright Phillips), and they now pick their players from the very top table. McCarthy isn't in that same bracket of player, and Chelsea are more likely to target the likes of Rakatic, or someone at the level of a Modric or a Zidane, they aren't going to be targeting James McCarthy.

McCarthy is at the right club for him at the moment. I think he is good enough to demand a place in a side like Everton or Spurs (who are supposed to be challenging for the Champions League). I'm not sure he would command a place at the likes of United, Liverpool or Arsenal though. There's no need for anyone to have a breakdown about this, it's just my opinion, but I don't think I am totally alone in holding such an opinion.

I want better and so should every Everton fan

Well yea, of course we do ffs. But we'll only have so much money to spend on transfers, signing on fees and wages so if we can get Cleverly in without paying a transfer fee to fill the squad out then it leaves more cash for ( hopefully ) one or two more bigger and better signings.

We could argue all day over why our finances dictate that, but this isn't in the thread for that, and it is the situation, so we have to run with it.

....the graft and water carrier midfielders are essential and so valued by team mates and managers but they aren't glamour type. Makelele hardly crossed the half way line in that Chelsea team but what a player he was in that position. I suspect MCCarthy might be more highly rated than you think.

I don't think Cleverly is the answer to any thing. A free transfer and a moderate wage then yes, take him as cover. I hope he doesn't become one of Bobby 's favourites who will play every game. We need to replace Barry, a strong presence in mid-field which will free up more forward looking players. We need another centre half and a winger to replace Mirellas. Barkley will come back and hopefully be better for his difficult time this year and prove to be an excellent No. 10.

If, and I fear it will, it does happen and he does come you just know what will happen when he gives the ball away in his first game.

BOOOOOO

McCarthy is a better player than Ramires, Willian and defo Mikel.

Not as good as Matic or Cesc tho.

They could push Cesc further forward and play Matic and McCarthy in the middle.

But yeah, James McCarthy wont be signing for Chelsea.

Arsenal, Spurs, United could all use him tho, in their first teams, probably City as well.
