I suggest you ignore everyone that isn't @LinekersLegs

Cheap replacement for Barry presumably.
Fair enough. Be nice to see a bit of competition between Besic and Cleverley to sit next to McCarthy and garath not starting every game. (Assuming Gibson is still dead for most of the year)
Not 100% sure that 2 dms work for us, mind. Bit of a worry if we're having 5 defensive midfielders in the squad for next year. Hopefully we can shift one or two.
the perfect cover up stephenThe irony here is I just negged his post lol

Agree entirely. I'm not a massive fan, but he's not as bad as some seem to think. And I was sort of agreeing by saying not many people have properly watched Cleverley.
Ive tried to watch as many Villa games as I can, hes been borderline terrible, decent and had a few alright games, nothing special IMO, brief moments of good.
He'll be fine as a utility player so long as he's not a nailed on starter.
He could come in handy for us, or he could be terrible. Depends on wages and signing fee I suppose. Gibson cannot be trusted to ever be fit, even if we don't try and move him on. That leaves Besic, Barry, and McCarthy for the DM roles, which we play two of.
Both Barry and Besic can pick up the yellows with the best of them, and shouldn't be expected to play a full season. McCarthy proved this year that he's actually not a mechanical robot from the future and can be injured. Cleverly can cover there. He can also cover the number 10 role if Barkley/Osman are out or off the boil. And he's not likely to demand to be in the starting XI.
For the price he has value to us. Ledson is probably being primed to step in when Barry retires (or McCarthy gets sold to Chelsea), and isn't ready to make the step up quite yet. Bringing in Cleverly gives us one of those players that can do a job when we are inevitably struck by 1000 hamstring injuries next winter.
He's not a world beater. But he's not going to cost world beater money either. Obviously we would prefer to bring in some top shelf talent, but it's not the first area we should be spending money and here's a player the manager has worked with and trusts to do a job on a free, freeing up funds for more vital areas (like CB, winger, GK, creative no. 10, backup striker...basically anywhere but LB).
Of course, now Roberto will put him in the starting XI and he'll be terrible and I'll be drinking bleach by October.
Naismith is a different kind of player.
Reckon we'd have kept Mikky had we signed Moutinho mate?
Martinez's words about Cleverley when he had him at Wigan:
"He can play in many positions and he is happy to be in one-v-one situations offensively and defensively, that's where he's got real variation. Sometimes it can be a negative to be able to play in a number of positions. Some players are a jack of all trades but not special in any of them. Tom is special in what he does, while understanding other roles within the team just as well. But if you were to ask him what is his best position, I would say central midfield. And I think Manchester United always saw him as that – even while he was here. . . . I have said it before, when he was with us, that his tactical ability is not normal for a player of his age in this country. He is someone who could easily fit into the Dutch or Spanish way of playing quite easily, such is his technical ability and awareness."
This has Moyes-like utility player written all over it.
