Prefer to be linked with a decent front player to help Rom. Not another average midfielder. Cleverley is not a top 6 player which is what we should be looking for. Neither are kone alcatraz and mc Geady all who for some reason that Martinez believed are. We will find it very hard to attract decent players in the summer so I suppose it's the reality of a poor season that we are linked will average and some of our better performers are being linked with an exit.
Kone replaced Anichebe, Alcaraz replaced Heitinga and McGeady didn't replace anyone as we were (and still are) short on depth on the wings

Net outlay was probably 2-3 million and I doubt we increased our wage bill much as iirc Heitinga was on a hefty sum. All very well wishing for better but highly doubt we had the funds then or are much better off now.

I think McCarthy is overrated by Evertonians. Don't get me wrong, he is a good player, and quite easily our best midfielder (not difficult considering who he is up against), but he is nowhere near good enough to hold down a starting place at the likes of Chelsea or City. He has a brilliant engine on him but he isn't very creative at all, he seldom assists and he seldom scores goals. He is miles away from being as good as the likes of Fabregas etc.

Chelsea have surpassed the stage when they are paying ridiculous transfer fees for 'good' or average players (like Shaun Wright Phillips), and they now pick their players from the very top table. McCarthy isn't in that same bracket of player, and Chelsea are more likely to target the likes of Rakatic, or someone at the level of a Modric or a Zidane, they aren't going to be targeting James McCarthy.

McCarthy is at the right club for him at the moment. I think he is good enough to demand a place in a side like Everton or Spurs (who are supposed to be challenging for the Champions League). I'm not sure he would command a place at the likes of United, Liverpool or Arsenal though. There's no need for anyone to have a breakdown about this, it's just my opinion, but I don't think I am totally alone in holding such an opinion.
Was offhand. I don't think Chelsea would be in for him. They know we demand huge fees and they can get anyone. I just refuse to picture him in any flavor of red, think Tottenham is too much of a sidewise step for him, and think City aren't savvy enough to see that they need some steel there rather than flashy names.

McCarthy will be with us for some time yet, but I was alluding to that in the sense that I don't expect Ledson to be in the first team picture for a few years simply due to his age and the desire to be patient with him.

Jesus imagine if he was Mirallas's replacement on the wing. They ain't getting another penny out of me if he swaps Kev for this chump.

If this is true we need a new manager - simple - ask the villa fans cleverly is muck !

I thought he was great yesterday. Really helps drive the team forward.

I was very negative about him when he first came, thought he was mediocre with a high price tag primed by the Man U link.
But Sherwood seems to have fired him up and he is playing some great stuff.

Played quite well yday, but is he worth £50k+ per week?
Lets face facts, no goals scored, no goals created, not a natural attacking player, not quick, an average midfielder.
Personally i don't think he will stay, and i think there is better value players out there. He did play well yday, but for us to go forward we need a complete overhaul imho.

Thought first half Tuesday he was excellent and probably his best half for the club.
Long term though we need a lot more goals and creativity in midfield so I'm still not sure on signing him full time.

Quality player.

Villa fans saying if they are to look forward ie move away from relegation battles, then they need better quality coming in.

Meanwhile top 7 club Everton "welcome in Tom lad"

Phenominominal

He'll deffo play left midfield for us, be that on the left of 3 AMs or left of 3 CMs (or left on the bench tehehe).

If Kone were even a quarter of the player Bent was for us it'd be an improvement. And cost £450k too.

Well yea, of course we do ffs. But we'll only have so much money to spend on transfers, signing on fees and wages so if we can get Cleverly in without paying a transfer fee to fill the squad out then it leaves more cash for ( hopefully ) one or two more bigger and better signings.

We could argue all day over why our finances dictate that, but this isn't in the thread for that, and it is the situation, so we have to run with it.
I wasn't arguing about finances
You mentioned not paying 15/20 mil for some foreign winger
Yet people seem quite happy to pay have half that for Spurs's 3rd choice right winger
We payed 3mil for Mcgeady and he's dog [Poor language removed]
And who says cleverly will be free
All free transfers want signing on fees
That could be a mil or 2 and his 60k a week over 4yrs there another 12mil
With besic McCarthy Barry Barkley osman and ledson
That's more than enough cover
With no Europe
