0.3 dribbles per game, 0.4 key passes per game, zero clear cut chances created all season (this was a World Cup season btw!) , zero assists, zero through balls... All whilst playing for Manchester United.

Yes, if the stats were mildly against him, I wouldn't use them, as it'd just indicate that he's not the best in a certain area, but when the stats conclusively show that he does literally nothing but five yard water carrier passes then it's reasonable to use them.

Also, his average heat map pretty much definitively shows how bad he is.

Tad unfair to look at his worst season, dont you think ???

Moyes ruined him. He was decent before that.

His downturn started way before that - he got injured, then came back and was a shadow of the player he was. Ferguson played him everywhere trying to find a use for him, but he was just terrible. Moyes made him first choice and, again, terrible.

He is what he is - a player who had potential, didn't fulfil it, and now isn't good enough for the level we should be aiming for. He needs to drop down a league in my opinion.

Doug,
Much as I hope there is no mileage in this story and possible signing... if he is signed, I'll wish him to show/prove me and ar kid totally wrong.
If he is signed I hope he makes all those like me/us currently unimpressed with him eat our words and rush to buy new shirts with his name on the back as the new Blue hope.
El Bob must see something in him from his time on loan at the Pie Eaters that many of us cannot see, so again, if he's signed I'll wish him well, butr I cannot deny I'd rather us try to identify someone who looks infinitely better now... and as the thread about Ryan Ledson suggests, why not give him the opportunity to blossom rather than buying in at over-inflated costs?

To be honest I don't think it's fair to compare Cleverley to a very young prospect like Ledson, even if Ledson was to to step up next season he'll never be relied upon to play the majority of our games for a start. That's before you take into consideration the relative roles they both occupy in a team.

From past interviews and articles like this its obvious that Martinez clearly rates Cleverley and sees a role for him in our squad, whether that's a minor or major position is yet to be established. For all we know at the moment this could be a simple cash generator like Beckford, or it could be the key to unlocking another facet of our team like Lennon has been with Coleman.

I just think until we've seen him and what he offers the team dynamics it's unfair to judge. It wasn't long ago he was a championship winning player and regular international, with the trust and confidence of the right manager he could regain that sort of form easily. There's enough people hating on our players we already have I just don't think there's any need to add another to the list before he's got here.

Hope he turns out incredible, if only so I can vault the eff out of you. He probably won't though.

It's one of those where I'd still be right though on how bad he's been since his 2011 injury.

But you can certainly vault me on saying there's little to no chance of him being anything other than a beige footballer at us, because there's nothing at all to suggest he's anything but.

Barry's too old, Pienaar's too old, Osman's too old, Gibson's legs are falling off. We'll need bodies in the midfield so worth the risk on a free I reckon, even if it's only a remote chance he could still turn out to be decent. That would still leave space both for promising youngsters to get their chances too I reckon, as well as a new signing or 2 in that area.

Can I just say as well, my objection to Martinez wanting Cleverley has nothing to do with the fact we've had a bad season

I've always been a "Martinez In" guy and that hasn't changed

Any objections I have against Cleverley are soley due to the fact that I think he isn't good enough for us and that I also think the money would be better served being spent elsewhere, with us possibly promoting from within the reserve ranks

I was very negative about him when he first came, thought he was mediocre with a high price tag primed by the Man U link.

But Sherwood seems to have fired him up and he is playing some great stuff.

A few months ago I would have driven him back to Manchester ..now I'll be very worried if he doesn't make the team tonight.

Do you not just think he is exactly the same as Osman (who is pretty vital, as recent results suggest)... Long term replacement. Good business. Give the lad a chance.
Bobby knows what he wants... We may not all be on the same wavelength but he has my trust. I can see how the team is moulding into something great! (Ignore the table and focus on the positives)

I think that's exactly how Martinez would see the signing of Cleverley. Cleverley is pretty versatile and would play anywhere that he's asked, which is similar to Osman. Osman is the same and is decent, not great by all means but decent, plays where he's asked and does a job for the team with no fuss and Cleveley will be the same!

Cleverley wouldn't be seen as a signing to go straight in the first team, he'd be a free transfer that would build up the numbers in the squad and be a player capable of covering various positions and players like that are handy for a club like us.
