2018/19 Tom Davies

Not really comparable. We had 1 left back in the squad last season, Baines then had a long term injury. Injuries to Holgate and Coleman meant Kenny the only other full back had to play RB. We literally had no option but to play Martina who was promptly taken out of the team the second Baines was back fit.

Numerous Everton managers have had multiple different options to play instead of Davies. Klaasen, Rooney, Vlasic, Besic, Cleverley and Barry at one point. All of them have now left the club though and Davies remains. Any of those managers could have sold Davies instead or benched him to the point where he was pushing for a move to the championship for gametime. Instead they’ve all played him and sold those other players. No one on the side claiming that Davies isn’t good enough for the prem can answer the question why that is. Rather than a lack of competition, Davies seems to have continuously beaten off the competition.

Klaasen, Rooney and Vlasic all play different positions than him, they were played in a more forward role. Besic was never given a chance due to injury problems he had. I don't remember him keeping a fit Barry out of the team and Cleverley was moved on as we got a fee (12mil I believe) that we could not say no to.

He is only playing at the minute due to Gana not being fit. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but you can't argue that Tom Davies is good enough to be a first choice Premier League player when after 3 seasons he still isn't.

We signed Tom Cleverley who is quite frankly what Davies would be in his mid 20s if he didn’t develop at all from now. That’s Cleverley who was an England international btw. Cleverley who the management looked at and decided he could be sold to Watford to allow more game time for the far more promising Tom Davies.
Ok sure. If Tom Cleverly is your ambition then he’s fine right now. If you really think nothing has changed with the management and ownership ambition since we signed Clev then I can’t help you.

As for why he’s playing, he’s currently playing out of necessity and is our 4th choice midfielder out of 4 in an area everyone knows we need to strengthen further. I imagine we would have done had our over areas not been sooo poor from a first 11 standpoint.

Kudos to you for defending your boy, but in reality, there’s probably hundreds of mids in world football just as good or better than young Tom at the moment.

That’s your opinion, not the opinion of four managers and two directors of football. They think he is good.
Or he was their best option in a poor midfield. You realize when Gana is available the boy can’t get a game over Morgan Schneiderlin who has been crap for about a year with the odd sign of improving. What does that tell you about how good they think he is?

That Schneiderlin, a player with over 300 games in English football and 15 caps for France is better at his specialised position than a 20 year old kid. Don't get what your point is here mate.

The conversation I was having originally was replying to someone saying he might burn out early but I said he’s more Ronaldo in terms of physique where I don’t see it being an issue.
Yeah I know.

I'm in the camp that think he'll burn out early. Or rather he'll start to decline after 30. Unlike the Portuguese Ronaldo who actually got better.

Anyway, we'll have to wait 11 years to find out who's right. Can you be arsed?

Did I imagine all those games last season when Schneiderlin was benched and Davies played?

Besides they don’t even play the same roles so I have no idea why people compare these. Davies role is the box to box player. There’s only really Gueye who also plays this position but he’s a different profile of player as he’s better at intercepting and breaking up play rather than trying to build attacks.

When Luka Modric was 20 he was on loan at Inter Zapresic making 18 appearances in the season.

Toni Kroos at 20 was on loan at Bayer Leverkusen after having spent only one season in the first team at Bayern.

David Silva at 20 was on loan at Celta Vigo after spending the previous season on loan at Eibar.

Zidane at 20 had moved from Cannes to Bordeaux.

How come 4 of the best midfielders in European football in their respective periods have been allowed to be poor and inconsistent at 20 but Tom Davies isn’t? How come they all developed and improved past the age of 20 (in some cases a substantial amount) but it’s assumed by some that Tom Davies doesn’t have the tools to. Some might say ‘see he needs a loan’ but then you get back to the question of why messrs Koeman Allardyce Unsworth and Silva think differently and keep playing him in the first team of a top half premier league side.
I can't answer for others but I would have thought the answer was pretty obvious really - they weren't impacting Everton's first team.

I know there are some who are saying Davies will always be useless but that's not what most are saying at all. The majority of comments are people saying he's not good enough to be playing in our first team right now. Yes he can improve, but this is a forum where people will comment on his performances over the last year or so, which have, to be blunt, been at best average and at worst appalling.

I don't think anybody's saying he's not allowed to be inconsistent or poor, just that they'd rather it wasn't while he's in the centre of our midfield. Seems fairly self explanatory to me.
