2019/20 Tom Davies

It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall for the discussions Brands and Silva have about him, if you suspend the fantasy that they agree about everything under the sun.

My hunch is that he won't make it long-term here and the desire to cash in on him under contract will eventually come to the fore. He can do a good job at a lower level perhaps.
If Tom Cleverly can still get a game in the premier league i think Davies will be alright.

Made his first team debut in April 2016, He scored his first goal against City 13 days later and has done absolutely nothing since. How many more years are people going to cling on the the dream "He's one of our own, I hope he comes good" It's not going to happen!

Tbf he's 21. How many 21 year olds are bossing it at CM in the premier league right now? How many have ever?

In general I agree with the point that it's a position where players mature late, but there are examples of players who if not exactly bossing it are playing regularly and not looking out of their depth: Lewis Cook (21), Declan Rice (20), Ndidi (22). Of more attacking players you've got Mount (19), Foden (19), Alli (just turned 23).

You're totally right that some exist, but i think to excel the young players in CM have to be defensively built (big fast etc) or playing high enough that errors in possession don't cost their team. I'm sure Davies would love to be playing with two cm's behind him like Alli and Mount.

He will certainly have a good career but I think we had hoped he would have progressed further and faster than he has.
He is old enough now to lose the " young boy " tag and be able to play most weeks.

I'm sure nearly all of the criticism for Davies can be originated from the 2017/18 season, where quite frankly we were [Poor language removed] until big sam steadied the ship playing the kind of football that would quite simply kill the progression of any young CM. (I still don't think he had a bad season for a 19 yo)

Last season we had a dream team CM partnership in Gueye and Gomes. If you compare Davies to them well he's going to come off not too well is he. And, he should be playing further up the pitch than our system could accommodate the majority of the time.

I think that CM is the hardest position on a football pitch and takes a long time to learn and get good at playing there, often good young CM's learn exclusively one side of the role, the defence or the attack, (the Gueye or Gomes role asyoulike) and i think a lot of fans' dismay comes at the fact that Davies has been relied upon to do both of those roles exclusively at times.

I think he has improved and will continue to improve but he needs to start showing it to everyone else this season that's for sure.
More to the point though we should always support our young players and try to give them the confidence to do well

Am sure its 25k
Thanks for the correction.

Still, for the amount of time he spends on the pitch he earns approx 1. 25m / annum.

For someone so young, having little impact on our fortunes as a club, it seems like a hellish waste and sends out the wrong message to all our youth players.

I guess, as Koeman would say, 'this is football' . Bang average kids on Kings Ransoms riding the gravy train baby!!!

I'm so sorry its not 1963 anymore and footballers don't need a second job.

Can anyone tell me what they think his position is because I don’t know where it is. I always want are youth to break through but since he broke onto the scene he hasn’t progressed is that due to bad management

You're sarcasm intimates I'm old fashioned. You're right! Mix that in with a general dose of envy and you've sussed me.

Maybe you yourself are a high flyer in the millionaires bracket. I salute you if so.

To look at it from your perspective and without any simple sentence sarcasm we
can indeed see this as money well spent.

The blues get great value out of Tom really. I suppose if we sold him for 8m say then it would be well worth it. Maybe that's why we hold onto him after all He fills out the squad with no complaints as a loyal homegrown millionaire kid.

It's practical for both sides isn't it He gets richer and richer and we still make money on him in 2 or 3 seasons time.

Good business Everton. Give him another 15 or so bit player games this season. We need his value to remain profitable. Tom also needs the extra capital to launch his Tom Davies fashion empire.

He's a No.8 IMO. That's where he's always played best. Not suited to 4231 which might explain why he doesn't look good under Silva or Allardyce. He did well in a 433 under Koeman with 2 other CMs

Mount has played 1 game mate. Davies has done more in prem than him.

Ali is pretty much a striker.

Cook would get hounded by our fans.

Rice too, who looked decent on hist first season....like Davies also did. Lets see his 2nd!!

Foden....ok, looks a baller.

Im not comparing at all, but scholes, gerrard and lampard were not even playing centre mid regular at 21.

I’m not making excuses for the lad but the number of managers we’ve had since his debut can’t have helped. Unsworth (temp) Koeman, Unsworth (temp) Allardyce and Silva. If he’s receiving different advice from each manager and each set of coaches, it could explain his slow progress. But sadly in the opportunities he’s had, he just hadn’t played well enough to warrant being in the side on a regular basis.
