2019/20 Tom Davies

He came from the academy and he is one of our lowest paid first team players.

He is also very young and has one of the best managers in the World to learn from.

Yesterday was a disciplined performance and he was very unlucky to not get the winner.

We have much bigger problems than Davies being an OK squad player.

He almost cost us the game at the end, by allowing the attacker to run right through him with the ball, which then led to Richarlison having to bring the man down just on the outside of the box. Nothing disciplined about that.

Not true since his new deal.

Richarlison didn't need to bring his man down. That was a really poor decision.

Depends how you look at it to be fair. I'd say central midfield is our biggest problem, and Davies has played there 22 times. He may be an OK squad player for this squad, sitting in 12th and riddled with sicknotes, but he needs to improve a lot if he's going to be a good player to have for a team with a bit more ambition than that.

And that neatly encapsulates it.

If we want to be Sunderland, mid-table in our league but happy to be ticking along watching "one of our own" put in 6/10 performances at their peak, then Davies will be in there for a while.

If we want to get into that top 4, he needs to be sold ASAP.

30 games into the season, Davies has 22 appearances and one league goal and zero assists. People have never been able to reconcile themselves to the fact that he is totemic in his averageness.

Having him as a cheap squad player won't hold us back from achieving.

Well it will if he doesn't improve and continues to play in half our games won't it? Ideally he'll improve and be a great option to have, but if he doesn't then yes, having below average players playing regularly will harm our chances of competing at the top end. I'm not sure how you can even dispute that to be honest, it's a pretty basic point.

He’s never had a genuine run in the side though as he? Like a proper one in the same position.
