How many managers has he had? Over how many seasons? He’s not 22 for a couple of days. It’s amazing how quickly people write players off.

He plays probably the toughest position on the pitch.
How longs enough to judge though? 200 games, 300games? Next thing you know he’s in his 30s and still producing bang average performances.

he’s played 113 times now as a senior player and in that time you could only really say he’s had 10-15 games max when he’s looked anything remotely half decent, rest of the time he’s been average at best bordering on really poor. Certainly not showed any stand out quality in that time other than the goal against city and a few games in the cup against lesser opposition

People say he should score more..... most of the games he played this season have been more defensive because of the problems with our midfield.

Last night we played against the league champions elect, we limited them to just three chances and Davies was in central midfield with an out of sorts Andre Gomes... and some still thought Davies played badly.

I think the opinion of a few on here as being worthwhile but I think most haven't got a clue.

@sageyefc is top qualified football coach and knows more about football than everyone else on the site.

He says Davies isn't good enough.

Make of that what you will.

I take your points which are valid, but all season our midfield has been pathetic - only when Gomes was fully fit did he & Davies look an okish midfield - we just do not have options in midfield, and in my book we need to sign at least two top midfielders a defensive one and a creative one classy not run-of-the-mill - our defence looks OK our forward line if supplied could be deadly - I am sure Carlos knows that's the area that needs quality - it's been our downfall all season imo since the Gomes injury - its become very poor not one player can lift that midfield ....atm.....watch it struggle at Norwich .....

Do you find reading a struggle mate? I'm not writing him off, I just said he needs to improve. I don't think he should get another 4 years and £10m to do it though, because that would be utterly mental.
My point is that to improve he needs to keep playing. If he doesn’t keep playing he’s unlikely to improve.

Sure, he could play for a different club and come back, a loan or whatever. Just nowhere near our first team as it means carrying a weakness.

If Ancelotti really rates him and decides he's the long term answer then great, but I don't want to see him get another 100 games just to see if he comes good, or because we think he's a nice lad to have around the place. If he develops and becomes a top class midfielder then nobody will be happier than me. At this moment in time I don't see that happening, and I think that if he continues to play 20+ games over the next 4 seasons then we will struggle to move beyond the bracket we're in now.

Not really. If he's as good as you say then strictly from a financial point of view the best option would definitely be to sell him. I'd say to properly get among the top 6 we need 2 new central midfielders. If we then have Davies, Gbamin and Gomes on top of that then Davies would easily make the most profit for FFP. You're talking £15/£20m of pure profit, it'd be a no brainer. That argument hasn't worked out very well for you has it?

So you want two new starting midfielders rather than one? Pushing Gomes out of the side?

This extra starting midfielder we are getting.

How much are we having to spend to get them?

And what are their wages?

I think we make one central midfield signing, with Gomes alongside them. Delph, Gbamin and Davies to support.

Would get rid of all three if possible

I don't think we can.

Also, Gbamin hasn't had a chance and it is still early days for Delph.

I know a lot of people have soured over Delph but I am happy to see how it goes over the next 6 weeks.

Me too - lots of sitting on the bench before a move to Villa for him please. Or Leeds when they come up.
