2019/20 Tom Davies

Not sure what happened to him. There was certainly nothing wrong with his level at the end of 16/17 when he was playing really well. He’s just declined massively from there. His aggressiveness is gone his confidence is gone, his touch has gone. Even in 17/18 he came back into the team ahead of Klaasen Siggurdson and Schneiderlin on the central areas because he gave us some creativity and a bit of bite. Now he offers absolutely nothing. Could understand if he’d had a bad injury but he’s been playing exactly the amount he should have been for a player hoping to develop in his key years between 18-22 and despite this he’s just gone massively backwards. 16/17 Tom Davies could run all over the current one and I don’t know why. Is it our coaching or the player?
I agree he looked refreshing when he came in.
But he hasn't developed as a player or physically in about two years, also his confidence looks shot best all round he moves on. Like many of our players he seems mentally quite weak too.

I’d be happy to see him sold. I thought at worst he might have developed into an Osman type player, not much pace yes but brilliant technique and a squad player who could slot in all over midfield and chip in with goals. I thought at best though he might have added a bit of pace as he developed and become the box to box key midfielder we all wanted Barkley to be. Looking at him now he’s not a teenager any more, he’s arguably not going to improve much between now and his mid twenties. If we can get a fee it’s pure FFP profit and he’s not a Grealish type who wants to give everything for Villa. He just looks like he joked about laughing on the pitch. Wijnaldum and Fabinho are hardly going to come out in the tunnel and think ‘Christ Tom Davies is playing today’. We’ll never get back to where we want to be until we have players who have that effect on the opposition.

Fair enough mate as I said sell if not loan
If we all held the same opinions mate this forum would be a pretty boring place lol

Assuming we brought in 2 new CMs to play with Gomes and Gbamin (both recovering from bad long term injuries), who out of our existing CMs would you keep as cover given that you are going to sell or loan out Davies?

Agree he has being playing to a championship standard for at least two or three years. Lets face it if he wasn't a blue would he be anywhere near the team? Not his fault we have had to rely on him though. We need two absolute warriors in the middle, leaders who can get box to box and put their foot in.

I dont think we can loan him.

At the moment hes a 21 year old 100+ match premier league centre mid.

A championship loan may make him a failed championship player and lower his value.

Could probably get £12-15mil for him now or use in a swap deal.
Think you're a touch optimistic with the valuation Zat but otherwise I agree. I just can't see a loan now being of any value to either us or the player.

On a different note, what's happened to Lewis Cook?. Up until his serious knee injury I really thought he was going places. Worth taking a punt do you think.? He could turn into our modern day Peter Reid. I'd swap him for Davies if the financials were right.

I don't think he looks as fit as he did. Always looks a tad weighty to me around the belly, not that I can talk lol

I'd keep Gomes I would listen to offers for any of the others , I suppose Delph may have to stay given the wages and he can cover left back not a fan of him though.

Delph gives us the homegrown factor also, need to keep an eye on that, it's ok having a clear out but we need to watch who we get rid of, same reason i reckon we might keep Davies a bit longer.

Yeah, I think you misunderstood. I'd keep both Gomes and Gbamin, so we'd have a group of 4 first choice midfielders for 2 or 3 positions depending upon the formation we play. But due to their injuries we'd also need cover for that group.

I personally think Delph, at his age, and Ziggy for that matter, would want to play regularly. We've already seen half arsed attitudes from them both at times, and Delph in particular is injury prone himself. They are also both on mega wages. I can see both creating a problem if they were playing second fiddle, and I think both would be keen for a move if it was made clear they weren't going to get much game time. We've already seen Delph linked with Leeds.

For me, getting their attitudes out of the dressing room and getting their costs off the wage bill are factors we can't ignore, which is why, of the three, I'd keep Davies as cover. Just for one year until his place in the squad can be taken by one of our up and coming youngsters. But as I said, if we can get decent money for him, say £10m, I'd sell Tom too and keep hold of Beni for another year. I'd definitely be looking to oust Siggy and Delph though.

He was brilliant, if have loved us to sign him but not really seen him since injury + his ratings seem very average

Yeah it's a gamble whether he get's back to the pre injury level, which is why I said the price needed to be right.

He'd just worked his way into the Bournemouth team when he got injured too. He was a real all rounder for a midfielder, something you rarely see in the modern game.

I think he would have been near the team because of our options in that position And number of injuries.
He doesn’t seem to have pushed on I agree, but he certainly would have played.
