Should he still be sold for 12m ?
It shows how little some understand about football or how blinded by dislike when it comes to assessing a player.
Last night was a more mature performance from Davies than you would expect from a player of his age.
He will have more good and not so good days as young players do . But, last night showed what kind of player he can develop into.
He's worth a bit more than 12m tbh. He's still very young but has plenty of experience in the top flight. 20m is the going rate the these days for a player like that.
I'd rather not sell him though. No he's never going to become a world beater, but he's a decent option in the squad and can fill in various midfield roles.
He gets the ball and tries to get us moving forward. It doesn't always come off because he lacks quality, but I'd rather see people trying to do the right things.
“Shows how little some understand about football”
His first decent game in yonks against possibly the worst midfield to ever play in the premier league.
He did well last night but some people are getting carried away.
He's 22, turning 23 in June.
His contract expires in 2023 so we'll likely need to extend it or sell in the summer.
Doucoure 27 and Allan 29 are of course much older than him but only cost £22mil ish each...
The question is, would you take £12mil for Davies and add some funds to it and buy another Doucoure/Allan or a prospect...
Or do you keep him as a squad player and hope he can develop to become a utility player in midfield....then extend his contract.
Wonder what we will do...
He's played well most games this season when he's been on. I think of Brighton at home where he was very good.
What you begin to notice with him, is the benefit of working with a top manager like Ancelotti. He's taken him out of the team when he was inconsistent, so he doesn't further erode his confidence. Hes also simplified the game for him. He was always a lad with talent, but was trying to do too many things too quickly. Yesterday he just simplified the game, passed and moved the ball. "Had a look at the game" as Sounness would say. It became easier for him.
For a 22 year old, to play with tha maturity and dictate the play in 2nd gear is some going. You kind of hope the penny has dropped with him a bit. He must take enormous confidence from that display last night.
Their midfield was absolutely shocking and it was their second choice two...
He has looked good for England u21s in that anchor type role where he has some space in international games...
But can he do it against City? Highly doubtful.
I think we need a defensive midfielder in to be our Casemiro though Davies may well be a decent utility option for us.
Hard to turn down £12mil at this point though.
Very good display last night, but as ever with Tom, he needs to back it up next game as he’s always struggled to do.
I could see him having a shocker against city then doing well against west ham.
He schooled Declan Rice a season or two ago.
I’d love nothing more than to see Davies progress in the same way DCL has, I just don’t think you can say he has after a few games where he’s been alright.
For some reason with Davies supporters, you have to say he’s the best young player in England or you’re a hater. Anyone who says it as it is, that he’s a back up midfielder who you wouldn’t want playing every week, is told that they’re wrong and don’t know anything about football, all cos they’re not gushing over a decent performance against a team with 1 point.
If we have 2 centre mids playing box to box like Allan and Doucoure + a defensive midfielder, then that may mean that Davies could be our 5th choice option which would be fine.
Hes not looking like he will be anything more than a utility player at this point, thats not a bad thing.
It would be incredible if he could use this time to really step up a level, earn a new contract and then have a DCL type breakthrough next season.
I just cant see it myself...i did with DCL but not with Davies.
My guess is that if a decent offer comes in he will he sold, otherwise we keep him as a utility option.
