No problem with Tommy D as a squad option. Low wages, solid enough and a grafter. He'll never be a world beater, but, he is a decent back up.

I never get this to be honest. A squad player is somebody who can be called upon in an injury crisis, who is good enough so the team doesn’t suffer. Tom isn’t that player, if we had to rely on him
And gomes again next season for 20 league games you may as well right off the season.

We need at least one new first choice midfielder and another one, who’s a very good player/young player with a high ceiling. Added to Allan and Doucoure. We need 4 very good options. Davies/Gomes/Gbamin/delph aren’t good enough to be one of the options

You always need back up, let's say we bring in a badly needed first choice central midfielder, we still need back up, so, we bring in this young player you talk of, this season should have shown you that we may well need more than 4 to pick from. Of the back up midfielders we have Davies is a far better option than Gbabmin and Delph, who never play, and far cheaper than Gomes, who we really can't afford to have as a fourth choice midfielder. That is exactly why I say we can do far worse than Davies as a back up.

Ok fair enough and having missed a season through injury and only having a year left on his deal. We probably wouldn’t get much for him. So I couid see him getting new deal, just to protect the clubs interest.

But from his point of view after 5 yrs and nearly 150 games. To be 5th choice for a mid table team is embarrassing.

I can see him going the following summer, if he gets the new deal. We have other promising youngsters who deserve to be 5th choice. Tom

I'd you have those 4 options then 2 of Allan/Doucoure/other 2 are unhappy. You need squad players.

Of course you do and imo we need better ones in midfield, im not saying we need world class players at this moment, because Allan and Doucoure are good but not great IMO , both would struggle to get in the top 6’s midfields. Ok may get the odd game at some of them, but not regulars. And even West Ham and Leicester’s midfield is better, Bissouma Is better than what we have.

If you want to kick on as a team you need quality back up. Probably out wide is the only area with have decent quality options. We have struggled so much with out a quality striker when DCL was out. And if. Next season Doucoure and Allan have to sit on the behch for 10 games, so be it

In the modern game to compete you need quality, at the moment that’s not us. But it will never be if the likes of davies and Gomes is our go to midfielders if our first 2 are out.

Ideally we need European football so we have more games. But until then we can’t just stand still. If we bought a new midfielder IE de Beek. And say him and Doucoure stared next season, there’s no chance they play every game, injuries, rest, change in formation, maybe Frank will want to play 3 midfielders some days.

We need a new first choice CB, CM at least and a new attacking player, that’s if we manage to keep Richarlison and DCL. I’d hope we can get another young midfielder & CB to

Agree. Think he should be given a season under Lampard. With priority to get an eventual successor to Alan (and Douc) and if Donnie stays, a younger back up, if he goes get an experienced 8 to go with the youngster.

Out of interest, what have you done with Allan and Dele Alli in this little hypothetical scenario?
