Rooney's the most advanced kid I ever saw. Only Michael Owen in my memory came close. For some reason he never achieved close to his potential imo. Sounds daft that considering he is England highest goal scorer and behind just Shearer in the premier league era. But he really should have become world class rather than just flirting with it.

I first really noticed Barkley in the England U17s that won the euros. He was the best player in the team but I agree that he didn't stand out in the way Rooney did. At that age Rooney was terrorising Premier defences. Still think Ross has the potential.

Like you, I expected the likes of Dowell, along with Ledson and Walsh to come through before Davies got a look in. But he's really grabbed his opportunity with both hands and has surprised me both his technical quality and his attitude. He's so much more than energy levels and endeavour imo. I think I see where our opinions differ Dave. You seem to be specifically preferring flair players and maybe Davies doesn't fall into that category. But that doesn't mean that he won't develop into a very good player in time.
I agree Rooney didn't progress dramatically after he left for United. However, Rooney's "greatness" is real and it manifested itself in how he - at the top of his career - subsumed himself for the good of the team as a whole. When Ronaldo came along he didn't get a cob on and lose it, he stepped back and allowed Ronaldo to come through and take the limelight but went quietly on being the fulcrum for the team and made himself even more crucial than Ronaldo for United's success. To do that with his talent took some amount of discipline and understanding of what would make for a successful team effort that gained him top honours in club football. He's done that ever since and and United owe him a great debt for being that type of fairly ego-less superstar player. Scholes did that, but Scholes (though fantastic) was never on Rooney's level.

Yep , Rooney was the best 16 year old I ever saw , in those early years he was special, hit the ball at him as hard as you like he'd control it , move it on or shoot. The great players like Pele, Cruyft, Maradona somehow moved with the ball in a special way, he had that look about him. He's achieved so much in the game, well deserved and good luck to him .... but somehow I'll always have that lingering disappointment that he didn't grow into a true great like the previous three or even compete with Messi and Ronaldo.
No Davies doesn't have the sweet left foot of Dowell or maybe the vision, but he's 18 and getting better , Dowell at 19 is stagnating. The comments that Martinez if he was still here would have given Dowell a chance before Davies are fanciful and show no perception of how poor Dowell has been this season compared to last. The flicks, delightful touches, even the long range shots are still there from Dowell but they frequently come to nothing . At this age application and mental attitude are often more defining than outrageous skill, and I know which of the two is applying himself best at the moment.

I dont come on here that much now....mostly due to the absolute nonsense Ive seen in this thread but davek has the rancid stench of someone who says things like..."Sheedys left peg? Yeah, maybe good, but a truely top player could do that with both."

The sky is blue is it? Pah....more of an aqua that.

Give it a rest

A very good player would be someone like Barkley. He is very good but I dont think will ever be a great. But I dont think Davies is on Barkley's level. If Everton have massive ambitions and back them up with cash, I dont think Davies will be part of the future. If, as is more likely the case, we have ambition with no real backing for them I can see Davies establishing himself here.

In his own words: "There are parts of my game I am good at but I don’t think I’m fantastic at any one thing – just good at most things. I feel I have to keep on improving".

I think he's solid at closing down, showing for the ball and recycling it. He's got a good forward pass in him. But he can maybe be drawn to the ball a little bit out of exuberance and that could make him a liability.

Who his age has better attributes? I dont know. I cant see the point of that request.

No, not those. They are world class. Great player I'd have as a Rooney or even some still a bit off that level. Davies isn't going to be in that bracket. Not imo.

No, I was responding to that comparison by another poster.

Dave players at 18 can improve a lot yanno, your acting like Davies as he is now will never be good enough if we have serious backing, can tell you right now he's better right now than lampard was at 21 and he ended with an alright career like.

Ironically, you could hit Lampard with the same things at that age. What did he excel at?

I've seen plenty of times before where players are thrown out in a midfield blob and fail to perform to standard. You can't be expected to perform at your best when there's 3 other lads tasked with doing the exact same thing as you, you trip over each other. I think the Spurs game was almost entirely down to Koeman's muddled system and lack of clarity.
He had no outlets apart from Lukaku (your sworn enemy btw). Davies positivity was null because we didn't have anyone apart from Lukaku making runs.
