Davies and Dowell seem to understand each other telepathically, much like Baines with Pienaar. One always knows what the other is going to do, and it's exciting.

Credit to Unsworth & co for having the balls to play youngsters at CM when Lennon came on and Dowell moved inside.

No WAY on earth would Martinez have had 2 proper wide men, with 2 creative young midfielders and Barry protecting the back four.

.....................Barry....................
Lennon....Dowell...Davies...Mirallas

Width, balance, creativity, defensive cover when needed.

If Davies & Dowell are to go out on loan it should be together, and no lower than Championship level. But I'd prefer them to be in and around the first team next season, ideal long-term replacements for Osman & Pienaar.

A very impressive full debut, and when I first saw the team I thought maybe we would go 433 with Davies in the middle of Barry and McCarthy , for although people talk about his central midfield role, and the Echo have labelled him " the answer to Everton's central midfield position for future years" he's made his name as a defensive midfielder.
The comparisons with Ledson are apt, in that Davies followed him into captaining England u17 in a DFM position, one of the 2 in a traditional 4231 system, and it was really when Ledson went out on loan that Davies cemented his position as a DFM alongside Joe Williams for the u21s. You can't really compare the two directly as while they have similar attributes they also have differences in thier style. Very roughly , Ledson is more like Barry , possibly reading the game better defensively and hitting the 40 yd pass, Davies is more akin to McCarthy box to box bundle of energy and skill. Yesterday I could see one day Ledson hitting the pass that Barry hit to set up the penalty , and Davies appearing on the end of a Dowell run to score a goal in the way McCarthy did. Ledsons captaincy of England seemed to give confidence to a competent player, whereas Davies confidence probably gave him the captaincy if that makes sense.

Great credit to Unsy yesterday ensuring that Davies knew what he was doing at all times. Particularly when McCarthy came off , Lennon comes on and goes straight to Davies and probably says something like " Unsy says you're to drop further back and play alongside Barry just like you do alongside Joe Williams ". Some managers would have hooked Davies off and not McCarthy, it shows the confidence Unsy has in his youngsters , and credit to Davies that although some say he went quieter after this he still played his role well although a different one.

And the mantra that EVERY youngster needs to go out on loan has been disproved by Dowell and Davies, while at the same time yesterday showed how much a loan has benefited Kenny. Loans are great if used wisely , I'm not sure he needs a loan next season, though he obviously will need a decent amount of game time somehow. We must avoid sending him somewhere like a League 2 club where some gnarly midfielder will do the " so you're the guy who's made a PL debut eh, have some of this". Find the right Championship cLub if we can.

Cheers mate. I was just going to ask with the glut of midfield talent we have (knowing full well the liklihood of ALL of them making it into our first team isn't 100%), how do we fit them all in? Then you have Liam Walsh, who plays as a deep lying playmaker and Joe Williams who is a defensive mid...how do they all play together at U21 level? This isn't even counting Evans...who I'm led to believe plays in an attacking role?

Now that's a picture that's either going to be vaulted to much aclaim or appear in the "Where are they now " thread in a couple of years time..... not so much for Tom Davies , I think he's well down the development path to a good career, but for the three of the guys in the picture with him.
On the left of the picture is Ryan Harrington , 1st year Scholar , u17 Wales international midfield or defender. Just behind Davies's left ear it looks like Morgan Feeney, bit obscured by the milk, another 1st year Scholar , played a few times as a centre back for the u21s and has broken into the England U17s , played their last three games this month at CB. On the far right of the picture is Nathan Broadhead , 2nd year Scholar , Wales u19s, and our top goaL scorer in the u 18s this season, and high hopes he'll push on in the u21s next season.

You may have misunderstood my reason for posting it.The RS spent 524 million in ten years for one League Cup.We are all getting exited about a billionaire owner, but maybe a new stadium and a slower building of a successful team using our youth, might be a better longterm plan.

I'd be all for this, but I sadly think most of the fan base want success right now and are not prepared to wait

Shame, as I think we have one of the best young crop of players ever with the current bunch

Along with the "Class of 92", people could be talking about Everton's "Class of 16" in decades to come

....we haven't come close to winning a Youth Cup for many years and I think that is always a good indicator of a potential diamond (Rooney) or a number of very good players (Osman, Jeffers, Hibbert, Dunne et al). Saying that we might have a crop at various age groups and I think Unsworth's pre-match declaration that 6 or 7 are ready for the step up is very encouraging.

We can assume Davies, Dowell, Pennington and Connolly are 4 of those. Liam Walsh couldn't have done more at Yeovil and might be another.

How do our under 21's do in their league mate?

They didn't win it did they?

That's an actual question. Not a wind up. I just don't know.

Every single week at Goodison they seemingly trot out one of the youth teams who've won something somewhere

But, winning things is not a sure thing barometer of ability anyway

Plenty of examples of youth players winning trophies and then doing nothing at senior level

Same as how winning a Heisman trophy doesn't guarantee you'll make it in the NFL

Man Uniteds sustained success was built around 6 or 7 academy graduates.
That lot across the park, for all their spending on players, have not bought many players of the calibre of Gerrard, Carragher, Owen, Fowler or Mcmanaman. Even Chelsea with Terry and ourselves with Rooney and currently Barkley.

IF this is a golden generation here, we should use as many as possible and hope it can bring the rewards. The new owner would strengthen our position financially not just to buy in talent but more so to keep it here.

An important point as well is that if we do start giving younger players more of a chance, other young players will see it and will want to come to Everton because there seems to be a genuine chance of advancement if you're a young player

The best young players will want to be in our youth set up, because they'll believe they'll get a fair shake of the stick
