Tonight's internationals

He is mate, but it's immoral imo. He is, and keeping him is too -- as much as it is spineless. And hence when I think of supporting England, I feel a bit sickly. I want nothing to do with that national team, at this point in its history.

And for more reasons, too. You may not believe there's an anti-Everton bias, but I believe there's a lot of media control and sky 4/city bias. Far too much, in fact. And as always they'd rather see global brands on the field like Wayne Rooney (despite his awful form, off the field antics etc) on the pitch than say... Darren Bent -- someone in form, eager to impress.

Well Darren Bent was injured today mate.

Talking in general. I don't think the media are the reason rooney was playing either, I'm just trying to make a point.

Like how they perpetuate the hype for England, and then are the first to stab them in the back. The media here is an embarrassment in many ways, and footballing coverage is just one feather in a very ugly cap.

I dont think anyone can argue with that.

I can try.

You missed the point entirely.

The entire set up is immoral. The players selected contractually is immoral. The culture of the entire England set up is immoral. A ridiculous majority of the players themselves are immoral.

That said, I wouldn't advocate not supporting them, or belittling anyone who does.

I think immoral is the wrong word. many of the players are w*nkers more interested in book contracts and advertising/sponsorship deals than playing football, and many of the decisions are baffling (what with the FA being involved) and managers appointed and so forth. But immoral? What kind of morality are we expecting from these people anyway? They are chosen for their ability to kick balls accurately. Not as somekind of ethical crusaders or paragons of virtue.

Pay some lad 100k a week from the age of 17, get half the country worshipping him like he's some form of demigod and have a great population of shallow fit girls desperately trying to get in bed with him and really, what is he going to know about the real world and morality? - these things don't make for a life of abstinence, fidelity, temperance or self control.

The only real problem for me is their performance on the pitch. Not arsed about their private lives. If anyone looks up to Wayne Rooney or any other footballer they need their head examining.

AMEN brother. And I'm English.

then don't watch it then.

I'd have to stand with immoral, as in;

deliberately violating accepted principles of right and wrong
without regard for morality; "he acted immorally when his own interests were at stake"

The entire set up (Well beyond players), and what seems the majority of the players consistently fall into the above description.

@leonbil - Wayne Rooney is an exceptional footballer and his talent is something kids should look up to. But if your talking about Wayne Rooney the man, then yes he's a tit. But his footballing abilities can't be questioned, and up until the last 9 months he's been immense.

well that's a dictionary definition, how does it relate to the players being immoral (in the context that they are footballers not community leaders, religious figureheads or ambassadors to the UN) or the set up being immoral.

All I'm trying to say,and I'm not being a pedant, is that we can decry the whole affair as immoral but its like criticising the catholic church for not being able to play football.

It does depend on what your measuring your immorality against.

This is true.

Vatican have never got past the qualifiers.

Well, the word is being used here in the context of football. It's a trivial point, immoral loosely means optionally choosing to go against social morality. So assault, adultery are immoral. "But, but, but - they're not as immoral as genocide", but they're still, immoral.

Anyway, the point was, a collective will to win a football match is no doubt adversely impacted by the type of people in that England set up. Top to bottom.

When was the last time England had a good manager? Strange that.
