5 points is a big gap between two relatively even teams at this time of the season when you're not playing them again.
We don't win and it makes catching them very tough. I've watched us not finish 4th a lot of times and not winning games like this is how you do it.
We win and we're 2 behind liverpool and 4 ahead of Spurs.
We lose and we're 5 behind liverpool and 2 behind Spurs.
Of course you need to pick up as many points over a season as you can, but its better to beat your rivals and deny them points at the same time than it is to lose to your rivals but beat teams you're not competing with.
If we'd beat liverpool away and Spurs at home, but lost to Swansea away and drew with Villa we'd be on the same points but they'd have less points then they have now.
I'd rather beat spurs then lose to Palace than lose to Spurs but beat Palace. Of course i'd prefer to beat both but given a choice between 1 win and 1 loss i'd go for the former (purely due to points and league positioning, not taking into account psychological effects).
