5 points is a big gap between two relatively even teams at this time of the season when you're not playing them again.

We don't win and it makes catching them very tough. I've watched us not finish 4th a lot of times and not winning games like this is how you do it.

We win and we're 2 behind liverpool and 4 ahead of Spurs.

We lose and we're 5 behind liverpool and 2 behind Spurs.

Of course you need to pick up as many points over a season as you can, but its better to beat your rivals and deny them points at the same time than it is to lose to your rivals but beat teams you're not competing with.

If we'd beat liverpool away and Spurs at home, but lost to Swansea away and drew with Villa we'd be on the same points but they'd have less points then they have now.

I'd rather beat spurs then lose to Palace than lose to Spurs but beat Palace. Of course i'd prefer to beat both but given a choice between 1 win and 1 loss i'd go for the former (purely due to points and league positioning, not taking into account psychological effects).

Evening lads. Not related but Im talking football with a Manc mate who's not best pleased at the min so I thought I would cheer him up by sending him a link for that counter attacking goal rooney scored at the emirates a few years ago in the champs league. Unbelievably I found nothing!! Any tips/links??. What a goal by the way!!

TBF you are off your head if you think the top 4 will contain a team that is not currently in the top 4 come the end of the season, there is loyal, there is optimistic and there is plain stupid

Really? Well we may as well stop playing now then if its so set in stone.

Well that is nonsense. Not in that you might well be right insofar that the current top 4 could well be the final top 4, but to discount either us Spurs or even Utd having a great run, or that Arsenal or Liverpool could do the opposite is, in your words, "plain stupid".

.......we haven't even played since the feel good factor of last weekend and everybody is doom and gloom. Funny old game isn't it?

Our rivals have mate.

They beat top of the league 5-1 to move 5 points and about 78 thousand goal difference ahead of us. Let's remember that a fair bit of the optimism was based on the fact that many of us expected Arsenal to do us a favour today. Our game in hand is away to 6th place. I wouldn't expect people to be buzzing tonight. Lose tomorrow and we need the sh*te to collapse horribly if we're to get 4th.

We will see lid, given that the rs where top at xmas and before today where 8 away from 1st means i think your statement is pretty stupid tbf at the end of tomorrow theyll be between 2-4 max ahead of 5th which is nothing with the way teams - rs included are dropping points on games vs 'easy' teams

OK, so hull may as well stop playing now as they wont finish above us. And YES really Liverpool who are 4th have just beat the league leaders and the 5th place team 9-1 collectively in the past 10days we haven't scored 9 in our last in our last 7 league games, so yes it is fair to say that logically thinking we will not catch Liverpool

....you might be right, but its an odd statement. A couple of weeks ago Man City looked invinceable, but within 10 days that situation has changed. I'm old, in '87 we won at anfield and went a zillion points ahead but they overhauled us. Win tomorrow and we're only a couple of points behind. Lose and we're not out of it. Lots to play for.

...I meant '86.
