Liverpool Echo are showing a tweet saying:
According to reports in Holland, Van Dijk move to Southampton is very close.

Given the paucity of decent central defenders in Europe I find it remarkable that no team of note has signed him if he is as good as you think.

Man U have a real need for a commanding centre half and their manager is Dutch I wonder why he hasn't gone there.

No team of note have signed him because Celtic have refused to sell him, he was linked with us in January and they held firm due to him having some decent time left on his contract

He would have been out a Scotland a year ago if he'd had his way

I can see it going back to 2 signings again now to be honest

Heres my spin on it
Looked like Shaqiri wasent going anywere so we went in for a loan move for him to inter which they probably thought its better than nothing so said yes its likely we can do this, we got excited and went to use out "attacking midfielder money" on a striker (Charlie Austin" hence why all of a sudden Martinez was saying he wanted a striker as we probably thought we were getting Shaqiri for just a small loan fee.
Inter went to stoke and said "listen everton want him on loan, is that offer still available?" Stoke said "eye go on then but this time make sure he comes talks to us"
Inter accept the Shaqiri bid and say to everton stoke have offered real coinage for him so we are accepting that.
We are now stuck with a situation were we thought we were getting Austin and shaqiri for around 15 million. Now the Shaqiri aint happening and a need for an AM is more I am guessing we are re arranging our budget choices or even just going for an AM and have to forget about a striker

#EFC Roberto Martinez says he won't make any knee jerk buys 'just for the sake of it'. Admits he still wants 2 more players.

Called it completely, so predictable Everton. Looks like its back to a centre back & a number 10. No Charlie Austin for us.
Pretty much confirms the Shaqiri interest was loan only also

Mikey , Mickey , Mickey as you well know if United wanted him they would get him.

to be honest guys, the club KNOWS we want signings, gaz baz came out and said fans must be patient, they know we want something outstanding to be competitive, its a shame its not before the season start, but we will get something. RM wants to be in the good books with fans.

like someone said a few pages back, a name might come out of left field and surprise us all

The rule of he Swiss Hobbit whose name I cannot mention suggests we shouldn't be talking about Van Dijk.

We're not getting him. We weren't even in for him. And he's going elsewhere.

Nothing to do with Everton at all.

I need a bit more than 'might' mate.

I will honesty be gutted if it's Evans and Lennon. It's just not good enough.

Kone scores one goal and we suddenly don't need a striker anymore, the past 2 years conveniently forgotten. Shameful stuff.

Does a couple more automatically mean two (I know it literally does)? I have heard that phrase spoken in more general terms by Martinez before
