So perhaps the idea is to have him and Barkley in the attacking roles with Cleverley and Osman as backup.

....it would be a risk expecting Barkley to produce the goods consistently. He shows flashes of brilliance but we need more. We also need competition for all positions.

I get that particular premise, but I'm also big on clubs/teams maximizing their assets.

Even when Barkley isn't playing great he's still one of our better players. There will be times he will need dropped like Rom last season but this constant desire by some that he's borderline a 1st 11 player is ridiculous. It's just as ridiculous as the calls to drop Rom and have him fighting for his place.

Wouldn't we need to sell all those players to PSV before they could use them in that alleged formation?

Speculation about Mirallas moving thankfully seems to have died down. Anyone know if Monaco has signed any wingers this summer - they looked one of his better options given they are in the CL.

Kristof offhandedly mentioned him today.

I should've better clarified that point. If these rumors are true, the club are essentially using two massive assets (Barkley's talent and the £15m transfer fee) to try and fill one role. There's almost no outcome where the club are able to maximize each player's respective value.

Thankfully I really think we where going to struggle getting anyone better. Now lets tie down Mirallas for the next 4 years with a nice fat contract and put this one to bed.

It's impossible to tell, of course, but what do people think: are the likes of Wijnaldum and Praet genuinely better than the Barkley we saw in 13/14?

TBF the ross of 13/14 still needed to be more consistent, and he wasnt much of a creative force.

Hes the powerful driving type, now we need the opposite to compete with him, a silky flair type
