Just done a quick statistical comparison (using WhoScored and Squawka's overall performance numbers). Of the strikers to join PL teams for less than £12 million over the past four years, all but two were below average to bad last season.

Anichebe, as it happens, was not in that group of two, but he was among the best. Genuine question: would people be happy if that was the caliber of striker brought in this month?

Any idiot who has watched Roberto would see that he is adept at playing in most midfield positions a bit like Fabregas was. It's almost irrelevant anyhow because the lack of creativity in our team means you could probably put Pique at number 10 for us and he'd still be our most creative player.

When you start talking about positions or tactics they get scared because their knowledge of football derives only from what they've been told by Sky pundits. It's their default defence mechanism. I enjoy your posts mate and am growing increasingly tired of this place trying to shut down anyone having a conversation that's the slightest bit outside the pre-approved party lines.

I think we can and should bring in better. If we can't bring in quality on a permanent signing we should look to do it via the loan market.

A loan was my gut instinct as well after looking at the performance levels. It's pretty shocking. All other positions had variance, strikers did not.

This I totally agree with.

It makes no sense to wait as we have. Unless there are clear reasons (no actual money being the obvious one) to wait. It's borderline risky too.

Still I do reckon we are in for a good deadline day. And by good, I mean busy.

You say this, but Barca fans, fans of the club the player plays for, they have even said he isnt a creative player and hes not, would be great if you could provide his stats, to maybe back up this claim. Hes a DM, my cat has more creativity in her left paw then Sergio Roberto.

You could argue they're spoilt watching Messi and Iniesta. The point stands he'd probably be our most creative player. He plays deep and likes to spray it around but can also do a job further forward. He's not David Silva but he'd be an upgrade on any of our current options. A good substitute for Gibson in my mind but with a bit more mobility and flexibility.

And there's the reason he has persevered with Kone for so long. He won't be cheap to replace. Liverpool were very fortunate getting Ings for free although then blew 33m on Benteke in their typical fashion.

I really don't know. We need a No 10 first and then see what's left over but if it was a choice of a good No 10 and a 10m striker or a great No10 and Kone I would choose the great No 10. We would have more chance of winning a cup.

I'd love for us to spend money on a quality striker but sadly we probably won't have the money to do so, and will instead spend that money on a playmaker and defender.

Meh an experienced striker familiar with Robertos style off the back of a relatively successful season for an injury prone not particularly prolific young lad who never quite found his feet.

In a way, I suppose so. Kone, as you can guess, was among the two or three worst strikers.

Thread summary for those who CBA reading everything: Lots of people using the phrase "bad tramps" and comparing this to RAWK. A half rumour about Evans for 6m. Otherwise no news. Oh Jozzy did a really good summary of the potential defenders we're in for (quoted below). Oh and the youngster Holgate from Burnley looks half likely now.
