Travel thread 3.0

We had a terrific three days in Liverpool in late August, the weekend we were away at Brentford, and we found a fabulous spot in St John's Market which I didn't know even existed.

It's up a lot of steps and there are loads of cafes with outdoor tables behind a long glass fence.

I can't find it on Google Earth and I don't remember seeing it before when I've been in Liverpool - the last time was 2018 - is it new?

There are even lawns up there. And what a great view. Is it above the underground market?
You wouldnt of enjoyed st johns market mate

The best thing about it is the gregs

Rijkmuseum is an obvious choice - it is amazing to see first hand all the paintings you have seen on tv or on the internet. Some are a lot bigger than you think

Anne Franck house usually has a huge queue, so I never went in, but have heard some people say it is worth the wait.

Canal boat trips are good too, especially if you cba walking for a while.

Scheviningen (I have no doubt butchered the spelling) is a lovely little town on the coast if you feel like getting out the city - dozens of cafes and bars all along the beach.

Eat pancakes. Every second shop is a pancake cafe.
Cheers.

Think i will swerve the Anne Franck house as i have heard the same about queues. I have been to the Anne Franck centre Berlin and found that quite interesting.

Will check out your other suggestions.

Any idea of a good bar to watch the Everton game? Have seen one suggestion for Cafe Oporto which is a 5 minute walk from my hotel.

Cheers.

Not sure about bars. I always stay with the wifes family near Den Haag, so never really went to bars in Amsterdam

Two new trips booked for Mr. & Mrs. Tree...

November 2022: no idea how she's managed it but Mrs. Tree got us two tickets to watch the mighty Blues v Leicester at Goodison.

January 2023: Skiing in Avoriaz. Haven't been up a mountain since 2020 so this is long overdue. Paid for in part by Nationwide, giving us both £200 just for opening bank accounts.

Off to Jordan on Friday, staying with friends in As-Salt.

While there we'll be doing a stage of the Jordan Trail, leaving us with just two to do, hopefully next year.

https://jordantrail.org/

The trail covers the whole length of Jordan, about 675km, and takes in some of the well-known places such as Petra and Wadi Rum. It's reckoned it can be completed in about 40 days but that would be pushing it a bit too much for my liking. Easier for us to do it in stages. I've met people doing it solo but I'd recommend going with a group or at least one other person.

Even by Arab standards the people are very friendly and welcoming. English is widely spoken but learn a few basic Arabic phrases and you'll have friends for life.

Also recommend buying this:

How did your Jordan trip go? I’m looking for somewhere to head to in February for a bit of warmth and some exploring.

It was great thanks. Walk we did took 5 days, camped overnight, 12 of us all together. We were in the north, temperature was in the low 70s. Last day spent in Jerash, visiting the Roman ruins.

February can be a bit chilly there. For me the best time to go is probably March, April, early May, followed by late September and October. But it's a great country that I'd recommend to anyone.

Cheers.

I believe you pre-book Anne Franck now mate and turn up at your alloted time.

Off to Rome on Friday for 2 days/nights. Looking forward to it. Haven't done any research yet. Only requirement for my trip is to eat and drink well, not that fussed about the rest
I was there last December. I was recommended by local people to try Trastevere for eating and drinking. Turned out to be good info. Lots a nice bars and restaurants and cheaper than central Rome even though it is very close to the centre anyway
