Travel thread 3.0

Finally made it to Athens. It was my first time in Greece, so will take things with a pinch of salt.

It was beautiful in its own way, and the Parthenon was breath taking. Otherwise, the food was disappointing, the people unfriendly, and I’d only go back because we didn’t manage to do the National Archaeological Museum.

Istanbul is head and shoulders above in almost every way (and cheaper to boot). I’ve been told the Greek Islands are a different story, so will wait to experience them before judging any further.

Thanks for this. We are looking at an itinerary. So far it looks like this.
30th - morning Staten island, afternoon world trade centre, early evening Top of the Rock
31st - walk to times Sq in the morning. Wander round. Evening as we are staying by Central Park plan is to find somewhere to eat and walk to watch the fire works at Central Park.
1st - Need to fill morning and afternoon , evening watching New York Giants.
2nd - Need to fill morning. flight back at 6pm

When I write it down not much time at all!
There's so much to do and see in NYC. It all depends on what your personal interests are.

I'm a fan of architecture, movies and musicals so when Mrs. Tree and I visited we made sure to see the Chrysler building, the NY public Library and Bryant Park, Grand Central Terminal, and we ate at Ellen's Stardust Diner.

There's a good restaurant by the library - Bryant Park Grill. Or two blocks south (6th avenue & west 38th street) you'll find the Refinery Rooftop bar & grill (in the Refinery Hotel) - Google them, maybe one of the menus will appeal more than the others!

Go to the TKTS booth in Time Square and grab same-day tickets for the theatre if that's your kinda thing. We saw Les Mis for about half the price you'll pay in London.

There's restaurants on the fourth floor and the rooftop at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art on 5th Avenue - great views looking west over Central Park.

I found the WTC 9/11 memorial museum enormously moving and spent several hours in there without realising how much time had passed. Definitely worth the visit but I think you're right to go for a walk afterwards, you may well need the time to clear your head.

Great place. Very clean, lots of friendly people. Yanks suffer from some strong stereotyping and some of it is well-earned when they travel the globe. But I found New Yorkers pleasant on the whole - I was amazed by how polite the NYPD officers walking the streets were, compared to the Met police in London.

I live in Greece (RHODES) and not many people like Athens . The islands are so different in many many ways. Hope you enjoy.

Right heading to New York with my other half and son who is 16. We are there 29th December to 2nd Jan. Want to pack as much as we can in. We have a NFL game booked for 1st evening. What else shall we go and see? Recommendations much appreciated. Appreciate it will be freezing but thermals will be bought!

Torch and Crown Brewery near Hudson Square (Manhattan) is supposed to be good. My friends went there and quite liked it--they have food. Probably crowded though.

Also, I would peruse this list as if you're on the way from place to another, some of these are quick side-trips that are worth a look:

Also, as you note it is likely to be very cold, so bring good thick gloves, winter hat, etc. Can't emphasize this enough.

Seeing alot of people i know suddenly becoming travel agents and promoting that they are getting a holiday to disney for a family for £200 or cheap cruises.

Seems they become travel agents from a quick online course and pay a subscription fee of £30 plus per month to get the discounts and perks. The company they are involved with don't care about selling holidays, they just want more agents to pay a subscription fee.

The strange thing is the holiday discounts the 'agents' get for themselves are legit as i know they have been on those holidays for those prices.

The pessimist in me thinks the discounts and perks will dry up very quickly and are probably based on 'agents' recruiting so many other agents who then pay the subscription.

Anyone else seeing this increasing in prevelance?

Yup. The three or four "network marketers" I know have all jumped on the bandwagon. Reeks of pyramid scheme to me.

Anyone solo travellers out there? I'm planning on my first Euro solo trip next year and I'm thinking Amsterdam (not for those reasons!!). Finding it quite daunting to even think about, happy to go anywhere in the UK solo, but Euro is a whole new ball game. Any better suggestions?

I have done some solo travelling. I am not a-naturally outgoing individual so do not find it easy to socialise on trips. As a result for shorter city breaks I make sure i plan a detailed itinerary of things I want to see to ensure I get the most out of it. When I need a longer break I try to plan around a football tournament. For the start of the World Cup I will be in Thailand for a couple of weeks. Looking to move between 3 locations. Plenty of sights to be see during the day and then the footy to watch at night. I am sure there will be a good atmosphere

Off to Krakow in a couple of days with the missus

Any recommendations for nice restaurants/cool little bars?

Booked in at Starka restaurant the first night but need a couple more

On the road from the main square towards the castle, on the right hand side, there's a hostel, with a bar. They have karaoke and its dingy, but lively and good craic

For cool bars I can't give a specific recommendation but you might want to try the Kazimierz district. Reminded me of Berlin a little bit. Plenty of places there.
There's a stack of bars away from the main square in the old town, bit they're unground. Basement bars. Some are proper quirky, have bands or karaoke. Worth sniffing out.

Agreed on Kazimierz area, its the old jewish area the Nazis cleared. Lots going on. But some terribly sad history there. Loads of memorials, schindlers factory (might be adjacent rather thsn in kazimierz) etc.
