Travel thread 3.0

I’d personally avoid eating here. Had some of the worst service and meals in Lisbon. Get the impression it’s changed a lot and It’s now a tourist trap.

Nice artwork and shops.
To be honest, I haven't actually eaten there but always went with the intention to cause looked nice. Good to know. I think in general Portuguese service is a little on the slow side, noticed that wherever i've been in the country.

Can rain a fair bit in December so be ready for that but can be 20 degrees and sunny. If you get the weather right sintra is really nice. Is 40 minute train from the centre.
Belem is away from the crowds a bit and has nice places down the river. 10 minute train ride from cais do sodre. LX factory is nice for a walk around but swerve drinks or food there. Is overpriced and terrible service.
If you with family, barrio alto is best avoided in evening. If you’re partying it’s where you’d go although is a bit much for me unless I’m in the right mood. Time out is pretty much guaranteed good food but can be rammed at weekends.
There are a lot of wanky bars popping up that have an almost faux hipster thing going on. Avoid anything like this as they’re weird and overpriced.
Depending where you’re staying I know a few good restaurants. Really like Picanhas in Santos but it’s not for everyone as is very basic and is pointless if you’re veggie. In fact veggie options are pretty poor all round I think. Alfama is nice for casually walking around. There’ll be lots of roast chestnuts being sold by street vendors and plenty of ginjinha.

Do not buy any street drugs.

I always stay in and around Barrio Alto in Lisbon - always feels really authentic and close by just about everything. Full of life all year round too but agreed on some of the pishy bars around there.

Back from Spain on Wednesday (which makes me very sad) then off to Sofia on Friday. Anyone been there who could recommend something? @DualityNSNO maybe? I wouldn’t mind going to Rila Monastery and the socialist art museum. And that big cathedral. Only there for 3 days so that might be enough
its all about the soviet style architecture in sofia,
3 days is more than enough, the ndk building is worth a visit and i took a in a game at cska sofia (who once beat the rs 3-0).
cheap as chips £25 for a decent meal for 2 with wine and all the trappings.
plovdiv is also worth a side trip but im not sure you have the time.

CSKA are the RS here, Levski are the People's club mate.

25 quid won't be enough nowadays though.

How wild is barrio alto lisbon is on my to do list at some point?
Many tourists?
Yeah it’s packed with tourists and locals on weekends. Especially in season. Is like a big area of small cross-crossed streets with bars on every corner. A lot are fairly cheesy euro pop bars that sell the most rank drinks you could imagine. Had an XXL pint of gin and tonic last time I was there.

Off to France, Nice to be exact, end of the month. If I get attacked by bedbugs I will be beyond pissed :(

I just left Nice 2 days ago. Beautiful city, entirely doable on foot. Took in a day trip to Monaco (also on foot but more difficult due to the hills). Not a bedbug to be seen.

However, I'll be in Paris in a week or so and I'm itching already!

Just had 5 days working in Istanbul.....what a colossal city it is, and manic 24/7. Didn’t get chance to explore much which was a shame but the sheer size and chaotic nature of the place was intriguing. The new airport is an absolute beast.... over 40 minutes taxiing from the tyres hitting the tarmac to reaching the terminal. Reminded me a little bit of Johannesburg for some reason.
Off to Seville over derby weekend.....visited briefly last year and so back for 4 days with a day in Córdoba by train planned.
Then Toronto for 5 days working beginning of November so missing the Burnley cup game and Brighton.

….last full day in Turkey before returning home tomorrow, what’s surprised me is how hot it’s been. Our first time here & we’ve been around 30 degrees most days. Fabulous hotel.

Hopefully a straightforward journey home, there was a loud bang leaving Speke when we were subject to a bird strike. By the time we got to the coast a decision was made to turn back so we diverted to Manchester to get checked out. Ended up delayed for 5 hours.

Last night in America, we landed in Chicago on 13th September and leaving Austin tomorrow 18.05 local time, It's been brilliant. Four of us started the trip including my mate who I first met in 1971 when we started at senior school, we don’t see each other often but you know your real friends.
