TV Series

Finished the last episode of Ozark.... enjoyed it even more the 1/2 an hour documentary of the making of it - i feel the interruption of Covid had a bearing on the outcome ....
Still a great watch though @COYBL25 - I can't blame on my birthday hiccups any more though lol
Finished this today.
Decent without being entirely gripping. Found myself drifting on my phone. Felt a bit like the same episode vibe every show.

So is House of Dragons worth watching ? Enjoyed the first four seasons of GOT when it was all about family politics but stopped caring as soon as the lame fantasy stuff started becoming a big focus.

It being pretty wank seems to be the commonly held view all over the internet’s from what I’ve seen. Then again that could just be LOTR nerds dominating the conversation.

Ive not seen it myself
Silly comment. Its based on a Fantasy series of books. Ya know - a genre. Don't watch a fantasy show if you don't like fantasy.

So, House of the Dragon is outstanding. But hey, its got dragons, which are fantasy, so my advice to you is swerve.

The first four seasons were up there with the best tv ever made, the fact I enjoyed them so much despite having no interest in fantasy whatsoever is a sign of how good GOT was. I even said this in my previous post so not sure why you are suggestings to not watch a show that is made by the same people who made a show I very much enjoyed for the first 4 seasons.

You think everyone who watched GOT loved fantasy? no chance, the reason it was so popular relative to every other similar themed show is because it was done so well it could also hold appeal to those who weren't into fantasy. Pretty much everyone i know who watched it preferred it before the late series became more action focussed with dragons, whitewalkers etc.

Im simply interested if House of Dragons has the same appeal, is it a slow burn like early GOT with a strong focus on families sniding each other non stop, or is it more similar to the later series with lots of actions and stronger focus on fantasy elements?

Takes a while to get going but have surprisingly enjoyed HOD so far. It’s been a steady build of tension and foreboding.
Not as good as peak GOT but better than the last couple of seasons IMO

I'm an episode behind but if it's warring families and factions you like with back-stabbing and political intrigue then it's deffo worth a watch. The episode I just watched (Driftmark) is pretty much entirely about factions and political power.

While the dragons are important they aren't the sole focus - it's more the power that the owner/rider/faction gains from having them that is important so far in HOD.

Cool, im down with back stabbing factions. It's not like im anti-dragon as such... i just have a low tolerance to ropey cgi of people flying around on the backs of dragons 'neverending story' style.

To be fair mate, I'm not sure I understand. I get the style you like, and I'm with you on the darker, toned down fantasy tropes being tamed down, I much prefer that and its why I love this world so much, dark, gritty, militarist, grimdark whatever you want to call it.

But this is House of the DRAGON. Yes, they are in this story and you see them, people riding them, but this family is ALL about that! You have to expect to see that, and when you do, not get upset by it.

Dragons are COOL!!

But they defo arent the focus of this.

As I said, I looked at a few future spoilers, I mean its all based on a book and stuff is gonna pop off next season for sure.

Yeah it has drifted into that a couple of times but percentage wise as part of the story it's tiny. A lot of the dragon stuff has been smaller scale land based stuff which just works better - like scenes from GOT with Tyrion going into the dungeon where they were locked up or Randall & Dickon Tarly refusing to bend the knee.

They've also been in battle scenes where they work better as part of a larger scene. But when they become the sole focus in the swooping camera in the skies manner then I'm with you - there's a degree of fakery that overrides the suspension of disbelief. Especially when the characters are having to shout Wooo and similar to underline how spectacular everything is.

Obviously going forward there's going to be a good chunk of sky swooping riders on back shots but given the strength of the story so far I reckon I'll be able to swallow it.
