TV Series

Just started on Coyote on Paramount with Michael Chiklis as a just retired Border Patrol agent. 2 episodes in, ok so far but nothing to get too excited about.
Julio Cesar Cedillo is in it as well who was a decent turn in Narcos Mexico.

Word of warning…..

Just started watching Making a Murderer with my son. I watched it when it came out, he hasn’t seen it before. Thought I’d show him a good old cautionary tale about trusting the police.

It’s just as engrossing as it was first time around but I’m 2 episodes in and knowing how it pans out and being able to focus more this time on the individuals involved has just made it excruciating to watch. It makes me so mad what they did to those guys, seeing the footage of them in custody being interviewed alone by self righteous bent cops is making me so mad I can barely watch it.

If you haven’t seen it watch it but if you’ve seen it already probably don’t go back a second time. Obs unless you are using it as source material for tackling corruption in the police force.

It being pretty wank seems to be the commonly held view all over the internet’s from what I’ve seen. Then again that could just be LOTR nerds dominating the conversation.

Ive not seen it myself

Its not ground breaking, or hyper-emotionally investing. Its not revolutionary in graphic storytelling, visceral or intellectually psycological. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, or burn down the house it was born in.

Its a simple tale, told with all the tools from the Peter Jackson toolbelt, cgi and special effects out the yin yang, costumes for days, sets for miles, wooden dialogue believing every word it utters and scores soaring when epic and fluting softly when close and personal.

People seem to have become the arbiters of the Tolkein Universe and have forgotten the stereotypical warblings of victorian era fantasist hold no basis in reality and can interpreted any which but loose, apparently.

Its Friday night fare, washes over you like an expensive Le’ Petit Marseilles and then is rinsed away and down the drain and you move onto the next thing. Its popcorn telly and to let it get stuck in your throat is about as useful to you as Eshers stairs.

Its not Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones or Chernobyl, and you have to just enjoy Middle Earth for what it is. Completely made up.

Wasn’t impressed with the final episode of ROP myself.
Pity really, as I thought the series had gotten quite strong mid season after the first couple of episodes being a bit meh.

I’ve read LOTR and The Hobbit (admittedly a very long time ago in my youth) but not any of the additional material that this show is based upon, so no idea what was original or otherwise.
My issue though seems to be this modern trend of trying to explain/give a back story to every character. Sometimes the ‘mystery’ is part of the appeal.

Ridley Scott fell foul of this for me with Prometheus & Alien Covenent by trying to explain the origins of the Xenomorph and this destroying part of the mystery that made them such an iconic fictional creature.

It feels like the same has happened here with the whole Sauron storyline to me (again I’m not 100% on what is actually canon or not in ROP)

Finally started Breaking Bad last night (don't fret, I'm a late starter with everything).

A question for well, basically everyone else on the planet. I only watched the first episode, so would it be advisable to cut it short and watch Better Call Saul first? Or doesn't it matter?

It probably wouldn’t matter in terms of the story, but you will probably miss a lot of the references and foreshadowing.

watch BB before BCS, whilst BCS is a prequel you will know how breaking bad turns out if you watch BSC first.

I think watch Breaking Bad first even though it's chronologically set later. Lots of the references in BCS come from Breaking Bad and BCS will spoil Breaking Bad.

I'm actually re-watching Breaking Bad at the minute now that BCS has finished to see if it feels different. Hadn't watched it in years, but it's still so good btw.
