Type 2 diabetes.

Got told 5 weeks ago that I've got type 2 diabetes, I was 61 on the score chart, since then I've cut out the chocolate (god that's been hard!) been on a low carbs diet, cut down on the booze :( had another blood test because the doctor has said they have to confirm it , I'm trying my best because I want to try and lower it naturally than go on medication. Has anyone else successfully done it without medication and who could help with something nice to eat!

I've heard of people reversing type 2 diabetes.

Try a good period of fasting each day. If you go from 8pm to 12pm daily, you are asleep most the time so it's not too hard. Cut out snacks and be careful with the carbs you do eat. We all need a daily intake of carbs, but slow release is better.

Yeah a neighbour (he hasn't got diabetes) said be careful of carbs that give you an instant hit, try and have the ones that gradually release slower. I've looked at the internet and it's a minefield of information mate, the good thing is I love greens and sweet potatoes and I've got good willpower. Since being diagnosed I've lost 8 pounds and cut everything out that's bad for me (apart from supporting Everton :pint2:) just don't like the idea, so I've been told that once you go on the Diabetes medication you have to take it for the rest of my life.

I do know 2 people who have reversed it.
It takes a lot of hard work.
Your gonna have to exercise, weight lifting is best. Your looking at 3-4 times a week.
Diet. This might sound weird, but high fat, low carb.
The 2 I know did it, didn't really restrict calories. Kept it at maintenance calories and then weight trained. With a good healthy diet.

It can be done. But you need to be sonstrict with yourself. One of them reversed it in 12 weeks.

how does this help mate.

The 1 who did it in 12 weeks was on meds.
He did one of those 12 week challenge things.
He has come off meds and he is no longer classes as diabetic.
This was last summer. He has kept it up.
The biggest thing though. His calorie intake has gone up by about 800 calories a day he says he is smashing through close to 3k calories a day now.
The man puts the effort in. He is no meat head, but works hard in the gym 4 times a week. Weight training. It has turned his health around.

that was the worrying thing for me mate, I was told by the neighbour that once you go on the medication you're on it for life.

Sorry to hear this bud.

Regulation of blood sugar can be quite easy and it doesn’t really need to involve going drastically low carb. A bit of food planning, increase protein intake and decrease carbs, and just keep an eye on the packaging for the sugar content.

Bit of pain but something like a macronutrient tracker, logging your intake may help.

Just finding alternatives to your cravings

No. Meds are not forever.
I mean. To be honest I would start putting in the work now and try as best you can to avoid medication.
I work as a mental health nurse, and I have a few diabetic patients. Since I have got hold of them, their meds dependency is dropping
1 lad has reduced his insulin by half in a few months.
Be strict with yourself and get lifting. You will get there.

Cheers mate, I've got the sweetest tooth in the world but have kicked it all on the head. luckily I've got good willpower so when I need a sugar hit I go with Black & Green 85% cocoa choc with vanilla extract, I have 3 pieces and that does the bizz. I've started having that Skyr 0% yogurt in the morning, I add grapes, blueberries, raspberries etc to it and I've really enjoyed it.

What has been great since I've cut out all the crap food my energy levels have gone up, all of a sudden I want to go for a walk, sleeping really well, it makes you realise that everything in moderation is the right way to go.

Cheers mate, you've put my mind at rest there, much appreciated.

I’m sorry to hear of this diagnosis, Lou. But like some have said here, you can still reverse and control it. Diet is essential and so it is exercising but you can do it, mate. You already have the desire to do so and that motivation is what it would help you get better and improve your health. Do you have a glucose monitor? As you make changes to your diet and modify your exercising routine it would be a good idea to keep the habit of monitoring it so you can learn how various foods affect your glucose. I will look into some recipes to share with you soon.

Good luck, Lou. You can do this!

Thanks sassy X. I haven't got a glucose monitor yet. The good thing is it's a wake up call to change my lifestyle. I've lost weight, loads of energy, etc. Have got the doctors on Feb 3rd to confirm diabetes. The worst thing is what to eat, at this moment in time it's veg, fruit, fish etc, it's just getting a tad boring, any help on meals would be appreciated. X
