Unai Emery

Russia is a very hard league. The point I was making was there are pro's and cons that could be made with each manager. De Boers record in Europe is poor. Emery's record in Leagues is ok but nowhere near his Europa league miracles.

I do think we need to knock on the head the "2 team league" stuff though. The Dutch league prior to his arrival was a very open league. Yes Ajax are miles ahead now and thats down to De Boer not the nature of the league.

Does De Boer have the biggest budget in the league? Yes he does (though he has to sell players). Thats a fair point to make. Pellegrini has the biggest budget in this league and has won the league once in 3 years.

6 top 2 finishes with 4 consecutive wins is a very good performance, even with the best backed team in the league. There are other problems with De Boer but that isn't one of them.

Thing with comparing the leagues IMO mate, would be i would expect any good manager of Ajax to be winning that league, i would expect any good manager of Valencia to be fighting for european spots CL and EL, and would expect a manager of ASevilla to be contesting the EL places, so overall in league performances relative to each other i think that Emery compares favourably as he has hit his targets every single season with both spanish clubs, De Boer has a 4 in 6 seasons rate on what his targets should be, in Europe then obviously Emery blows him away ofc

Has what De Boer done been good - yes, has it been absolute mindblowing - nah
has what Emery overall achieved been much better - yup - 3 european trophies on the bounce is something only one other coach has ever achieved in the game and he has done it whilst still hitting his league targets for the team - ensuring european football

three third place finishes in 4 full seasons with Valencia, a 6th place in his first season after they finished 10th the year before, and taking over a team twice (Valencia and Sevilla) who had a financial mess on their hands and having his best players sold from under him consistantly at both

seven years managing Valencia and Sevilla and qualified for Europe each and every season with both (5 times CL, twice Uefa)

You say winning the Europa League 3 times is good and I totally agree.

BUT, lets look at the clubs he beat in the finals.

This year, a Vermin team that finished 8th in its league, a team that hasnt won its league title for 26? years
Last year, Dinipro, a team that has NEVER won its domestic league
Then Benfica, a domestic powerhouse who last won a major European trophy over 50 years ago

Also beat:

Juventus
Borussia Mönchengladbach x3
Molde
Basel
Athletic Bilbao
Shakhtar Donetsk
Feyenoord
Standard Liège
Rijeka
Villarreal x2
Zenit Saint Petersburg
Fiorentina x2
Mladost Podgorica
Śląsk Wrocław
Estoril
Freiburg x2
Maribor
Real Betis

Porto
Valencia

Makes a change from falling to the first decent opposition you come up against, doesn't it?

They didnt beat Juve in the Europa League, they beat them in a dead rubber CL game when Juve had already qualified, the rest are basically utter no marks.

I see 2 things here.

1) Sevilla can't beat teams at the UCL level. Perhaps a symptom of their lack of holding on to key players?

2) Sevilla can't beat teams at the UCL level, the next level for Emery to challenge himself at. Doesn't that support the theory he has brought Sevilla the furthest that he can? That means for him to challenge himself, he needs to move elsewhere. We might not be in EL or UCL next year but we're in better financial shape to challenge.

Don't disagree that these aren't the hardest opponents to beat, but losing to the likes of City, Gladbach (1x) and Juventus aren't unacceptable at most clubs. That away form is worrying sure, but that's one season after 2 decent seasons.

If we get the chance to beat the mighty Mladost Podgorica, I'm sure most of us will take it easily!

I love the negativity on this site. We look at a man who has won 3 European theories in three years and we can pick fault. He beat three nobodies in he finals.
Not even a glass half empty type more a No glass at all type.

You ain't seen nothing yet!
