USMNT

What stadium was this game at ? I’m not sure how good Mexico are at the minute but that’s a great result
It was played at the Cincinnati’s glistening TQL Stadium and it was buzzing. Mexico at the moment is good but not a good as the US as we are top on the qualifying table. And if I’m correct, with this win we have beaten Mexico 3 times on a row for the first time ever so the momentum is definitely on our side.

Well there is none in Conmebol either. Friday’s ref was bad, the Mexican players deserved a couple of cards that were not given. But Thursday ref in the Colombia vs Brazil match was even more awful. Neymar was aggressive, provocative and totally irreverent throughout the match and he got away with it while generating yellow cards for Colombia.

How was this confrontation was not a card still puzzles me.

Wow I haven't seen any of that. That is worse, not trying to compare but did you see I believe the Mexican CB stand over almost trying to intimidate the ref?

Never noticed the officiating was as bad in conmebol but I'm usually watching it without a horse in the race so perhaps it doesn't stick out to me, but I totally believe it's possible.

In Europe you get guys who are just inept, you go to CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, and CAF and I feel like you got not clue what this ref is going through. They look beleaguered half the time before the games start lol.

I actually did see that and I thought it was very similar to the intimidating way Neymar interacted with the ref the other night. Both players should have at least being given a yellow for such behavior.

In Europe refs are definitely a bit better than CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, and CAF but in general I have no high opinions of refs.

For most of the world, the domestic matches these referees take charge of aren’t nearly as intense as World Cup qualifiers… so they aren’t ready for the pressure. They often lose control early and have total shockers.

On the other hand, the best European referees work the best leagues in the world, plus the Champions League. They aren’t awed at all and they’re not going to bottle very many decisions.

I would always take my chances with a European referee over any other continent.

Steffen in but you've yet to try and pass out and he's gotten beaten from 35 yards (not saying it was an error, but factually he's been beaten from 35 yards). I just like the keeper that makes all the saves.

True

That ball was moving all over the place too
I just think when you've got this decision and the justification is passing ability you need to use that ability or you don't get leeway when the keeper is beat from there or does what he did against Costa Rica. Start passing out and whatever, you need Steffen I guess.

Who’s the standout alternative though?
Turner. Hasn't put a foot wrong for the national team and has been the best keeper in MLS (I know, I know, it is still a professional league with some good players) for a good few seasons. The guy can just play.

My bigger thing with Steffen is sharpness. He doesn't have it because he plays twice a month at best.

Ah right, never heard of him. Steffen is the only yank keeper I know. Seems a pretty empty position for a country your size.
