Young player of the season Apostolos Vellios last season 15 appearances 3 goals

Victor Anichebe 16 appearances 6 goals.

It was just a popularity contest.

There's more to it than just how good your performances are every week without it automatically being a popularity contest.

If it was based on performances alone then Baines would win it every year.

Heitinga won player of the year because he really proved his worth and made a strong case for being a starter in the team. Vellios got it because he was our best proper young player (Anichebe being in was a bit stupid, seeing as he's been in the first team for 4 years).

Will be an important analysis of his progression (or lack thereof) as an Everton player against Swansea in 10 hours' time. If we're being honest he has been as unlucky as he has been blameworthy for his own admittedly dismal record of appearences. Alot of the time he gets injured - I think that is the main source of alot of our frustration, certainly mine - but also he has had to deal with things like Kevin Nolan nearly chopping him in half when he was getting a run in the team at Newcastle a few years back, and the fact we play with one up front. Enough excuses though, because more than anything, he just hasn't been good enough to get a run in the team. He can score all the tap-ins he likes, but until his link up play improves, he will never be near enough to the first team. He is sorely lacking in this area, whereas Jelavic is a livewire with masterful technical ability and innate positional sense.
Is it too late to say Victor could learn from him? 24, he can't keep the 'youngster' tag going forever. I remember him making his debut, and it seems like an age ago - Duncan and Big Nige were still playing, for christ's sake - he's got to show a drastic improvement in his all round game.

I think that's why he was so happy with his goal against Newcastle. It was a goal of real quality, it was difficult to pull off. It was something he was rightly proud of, not to mention the fact it was 85 minutes in and it was of huge importance. You could see him doing his best 'Le Sulk' impression (along with his suspiciously frequent injuries, his tendency for self-pity is another thing that appears to grind most of us) last year when he was scoring. Bemusing though it was to see a player shrug off a goal, he knew that profitting solely from the work of players around him, getting lucky breaks or scrambling in dodgy goals wasn't enough, and nor should it be. Today's strikers need to be of the Jelavic mould: team players who can still be man of the match contenders without even getting on the scoresheet. Victor can only be defined from a solitary perpsective: goalscoring. It's not enough.

Interesting to see how he performs tomorrow.

I don't hate Victor I just think it's a crying shame that with the physical attributes with which he has been blessed and the opportunities that life has given him he allows indifference, sullen attitude and laziness to affect how he plays for Everton.

In this age of doping and masking can't we pop something in his gatorade (bit of whizz perhaps and some micronised + attitude adjustment powder) ? .. then when his job is done lob him a drinks bottle with the necessary masking agent. He doesn't seem the brightest of lads he'd probably not notice any difference apart from so many people not being on his back. Another one from the daft ideas factory.

Chatted to a friend's dad, who was a Premiership coach and a mate of Moyes (I have no idea if he got this from Davey). His take is that big Vic has all the attributes of Drogba, big, strong and can finish, but simply does not have footballing intelligence and won't have which is where it fails.

^^^^ This in a nutshell..... he does not have a footballing brain and it's not something which can be taught... for this reason alone he will never become a top player.

I think he falls short of Drogba in quite a few ways to be honest, first touch, shooting ability etc. He's easily as strong as him though and should learn to put him self about a lot more. Defenders should be bouncing off him but more often than not he ends up collapsing to ground the moment there's any contact.

I really really hope he plays well today and makes me eat my words.....

The thing about it is he has quality some of the stuff he pulls of is sublime especially some of his finishing, Monday was an example, i remember him scoring prob the best Everton goal ive seen in years against Brum away a few seasons ago.

He needs to develop consistency in preformence - hes been threatening it in the last year, impact more frequently, prob develop his confidence etc. Hes never going to be a 20 goal a season a season man IMO, but he has a role to play and his size, presence and physicality make him a useful addidtion to the squad, how much he wants to be considered first choice is up to him really - you have to take your chances - be hard to drop him if he scored and impacted in every game Niko is out.
