This is so wrong mate. He didn’t even attack the player anyway, he just drifted out in that general direction. If he’d gone flying out there to nail him before could cross it then yeah, but just putting yourself in a position where you can neither stop the ball being delivered or mark someone in the box? No coach is ever telling you to do that, I can assure you of that.

Was a hopeless cause admittedly mate, but if you watch it, he’s the last man, essentially the centre half, he’s come across, it’s clear Nunes has out paced Gana, he has to try and stop the play, the cross I think comes earlier then he expected, to be fair to Nunes it’s a good cross at pace behind the line he’s holding, he’s trusting that out other defenders are getting back and he may be able to force Nunes down the line, if he can hold up play - the others defenders are outpaced by Salah etc.

Id be critical about other aspects of his game yesterday, but we backed ourselves not to get caught on the counter from our own set price and possession - we played that % and got stung, he came across as last man, when Gueye lost his legs, trusting his other colleagues get back - they dont they were beaten in the foot race. I wouldn’t crotosce the lad for what defenders are thought to do as last man. Useless marking a man or apace when you are the last man.

No decent coach is ever telling you to do the same thing every time regardless of circumstance. You’ll be drilled on defensive shapes and where you should be heading if someone’s out of position etc but you should always be working out where the danger is and how best to prevent it. If you paused that video and asked any professional coach what they would want mykolenko to do I doubt any would say go where he goes. It’s one of those things you might say as a general rule in a classroom but on the pitch you expect a player to see that there’s much more chance of a goal from the pass than the run. He makes a decision that makes nunez’s mind up for him, and means at no point does he get within 10 yards of either man or ball, no coach would ever tell you to do that in a real life situation, regardless of what the guidance might be in a manual.

I agree he gets no where near influencing it, he’s caught between Gana - could foul him, then he’s active as last man and trys to get to the player of force him wide, defenders will be told to go to the man as last man, so,that’s his thought process and theroritcally he’s doing the correct thing, in hindsight is it the right decision, that’s subjective. For me he has two unknowns, 1. Where the rest of his defenders are and can they get back to plug the space he’s left in behind, he’s hoping he can hold Nunes up, secondly he doesn’t expect Nunes to cross where he does and the quality of the cross in behind him makes him inactive. Nunes has a better view of the game unfolding.

As we know the play unfolds and he gets caught, being inactive covering Gana as last man, the quality of the cross takes him out - but as the last man he has to go to the ball. In hindsight was it the right decision, to be honest I think he’s on a hiding to nothing 4 on 1, no matter what choice he makes, but I think he does what any defender as the last man would do and be coached to do, come across, get as close to the man in possession of the ball as you can and influence play. I think they still score if he’s marking one and three other bodies are free and Nunes driving into free space.

You keep saying he is the last man, yet Gana is with Nunez showing him down the left towards the corner flag. Watch it again they are near enough stride for stride. So there is literally no need for him to go out unless Nunez cuts inside and beats Gana or beats him for pace further down the pitch. Even then, he will probably still be down the left with a lot to do. He made it so easy for him. Woeful defending and awareness.

….in fairness, Coleman had an opportunity to stop that attack at source, even if it meant giving a foul away on the edge of their box. It’s what you have to do.

We defend ok when the back four is set but struggle when teams break on us after a set piece. Similarly if the ball is turned over in midfield when one or two of our defenders are a little upfield, we can’t cope. We’ve conceded a few goals when the likes of Gueye got turned over and the back weren’t set.

it’s something Lampard couldn’t deal with.

Both goals Coleman had opportunities to take one for the team, both times he didn't and both times it cost us. But I'm not surprised, they're not savvy, they have no in game management skills or awareness and more importantly, the majority of them (exceptions being Tarkowski, Onana and Gueye ) don't put anywhere near enough foots in, hence we lose a huge amount of 50/50 balls.

But we are all gentlemanly and do things the right way and everyone respects us, well they respect points we surrender. Been a soft touch for years.

Its a fair point mate, Gana has a shot, Nunez beats Gana though clearly, so when he gets ahead of him Myko is active and the last man, the window where that happens is short, but you hae to factor in anticipation. Regardless Myko is the last defender though, so he is essence is in preparation to attack the ball as the last man, he has to come across, hes is however caught in that phase of - will Gana foul him and needs to stay more central or he has to come across and attack Nunez - where does he need to become active, in that transition Nunez knocks the ball in behind him, fundamentally he didn't effect the play and maybe he was a bit hesitant, but in terms of what defenders are thought and what he should be doing as the last man - he does it.

I do know where you are coming from though, Gana clearly has a shot at challenging Nunez - unfortunately hes out muscled and Nunez turns on the after burners and beats him and Myko is then last man - id suggest hes come across across to prepare for that eventuality. Im not saying he had a good performance or anything, but i can understand the thought process in term of coaching and what defeders are t hought. As someone else pointed out in game decision making also comes into play, but id also suggest he's on a hiding to nothing 4 on 1 as the last defender, i just think criticism in that phase of play is harsh, there is likely not much he can do in the context to influence the play, there were just to many fires. Personally i thought if Pickford was more composed or held a deeper line, we would have made it more adverse for Salah to score - though hes good in those positions.
