Confirmed Signing Vitaliy Mykolenko

Near £30mill if we get Patterson. TTFN
It's another low risk high upside signing though for a relatively low fee. Patterson and Ramsay are being seen as the future of Scotland in the RB position and at his age, he will retain his value for the next few years. I rather 5m to 10m on Patterson than 25m for Royale (sp) of spurs.

Again, not against it. It's perfectly fine for a well ran club. But we're not. We need a right back who's on par/better than Coleman right now.

This idea of age and value compared to performance is skewed in my book sometimes. The tick boxes seem to be - under 25, low wages, good resale value.

If they perform well...that's a bonus.

And I say this because...our squad is full of holes that need bodies in to play straight away.

On the flip side you can day £30mill on a LB and RB development players...or £30mill on another Doucoure....

It's how you spend. We've done it poorly, but still doesn't mean you can't try to get some elite level in.

Hasn’t Ramsey been playing left back?

I see your point. We'll only find out if they are ready if and when they sign and start playing. Sometimes rumours end up being rumours.

We looked long term on Kean as well

Kean as a player may turn out to be really good, difficult one to predict.

The major problem with signing Kean is that we, like most teams nowadays, were playing with one striker - and even if/when we play with two we had DCL and Richarlison. Essentially we bought a promising young player without any thought to his pathway to the first team. That was the real mistake, not necessarily identifying him as a player with talent. What we actually needed was an experienced striker who would be happy as a squad player while accepting that DCL would be first choice.

Selling players in their late 20s and buying players in their early 20s is not a bad strategy at all (Digne out - Mykolenko in) for teams in the sort of position we are in as long as your scouting is up to par and you can provide a clear pathway to the team (both of these are enormous doubts for us a lot of the time).

Absolutely zero problem with the concept of selling Digne to fund moves for Mykolenko and Patterson in principle, it's something we should look to replicate right across the squad to players in the right age brackets, but if we don't do it properly then we'll end up no better off than we are now.

And fully expect zero progression apart from a game of monopoly with players.

£60-80mill on "maybes". Sure if you want to run like business

It's how you spend. We've done it poorly, but still doesn't mean you can't try to get some elite level in.

If you want to run the club recruitment side like a business then you have to sign younger players and develop them...and/or target undervalued players.

Theres plenty of examples in each department across the continent.

Signing a right back who is "better than Coleman" isnt going to be difficult and Patterson walks in ahead of him on talent. Its not going to be a contest. Although perhaps he'll need the rest of the season to adapt, same as Mykolenko -- season is pretty much lost anyway.

For £30mil Mykolenko and Patterson would be astute business. The upside and value for both make perfect sense -- thats not to say we dont need Doucoure types who can come in and hit the ground running 7/10 each week.

You mention that we should try to bring in "elite level" players. Would you class someone like Tielemans or Fofana for Leicester as close to that level?

If we want to bring in "elite level" we'll be looking at those players demanding big wages who have a weakness, e.g a Mina/James who are injury prone...otherwise they will go to better sides.

The way to have "elite level" players is to scout those at smaller clubs that are in the u23 age group and can slot into the team and be developed to that level of quality.

Ive mentioned a few that could slot in immediately and those like Kamara (Marseille), Antony (Ajax), Gouiri (Nice),Tchouameni/Badiashile (both Monaco) all have tremendous upside potential.

The critical element is risk. Should we spend £18mil on Mykolenko, £12mil on Patterson and £10mil on Kamara for example...

...or £40mil on a definite 7/10 starter in one position.

You say "our squad is full of holes" so surely signing more players for the same cost as one player makes more sense.

i'd also favour a £40mil player still being in the u23 age group as thats the type of signing who could develop into an £80mil+ player.

Once we have the team/squad with a decent amount of young talent thats when we need to bring in 3 Doucoure type signings to ensure that there are players who bring consistency 7/10 each week.

Hasn’t Ramsey been playing left back?

Right back but i think hes two footed and can play both sides.

If hes £5mil or so then we should be signing him as well and leaving him at his club for the rest of the season.

Then preseason we bring him in to develop as rotation for the full backs.

Patterson can't walk into the rangers side never mind he's expected to walk into ours at a level he's never ever played at.

You mentioned Fofana and Tielemans....close to £80mill spent on the two. Tielemans was also on loan for a season before they threw £40mill at him. They weren't back up, they were buys ready for the 1st team in addition to already having players in those positions...CB Evans, Soyancu, Morgan. MF Ndidi, Choudray. They have solid foundations.

At the moment we don't.

So again, I'm not against the signings...I'm pointing out that we don't have any foundations to incorporate them.
