I had a substantial Warhammer 40K army as a teenager
I enjoyed it. Was good innocent fun with my friends, before the internet

Actually, wonder where all that stuff went to...
Worth absolute bucket loads now. My cousin had a huge amount of it, and it's still all intact. The prices people pay for the 90s versions are insane on EBay.

Myself and my mate loved collecting these when we were in our teens in the 90's. Only trouble was, while my mate was a very talented painter, and his figures wouldn't have looked out of place in White Dwarf magazine, mine always looked like I'd used my toes to paint them. I was never really into the serious gaming aspect, though I do have fond memories of playing plenty of Blood Bowl (I think that was the name). On the rare occasion I pass a Games Workshop nowadays, I still pop in and have a browse for the nostalgia. Are they all plastic now? I remember them being decently made lead metal figures, I assume that wasn't the best material choice in hindsight!

Same, mate had a Dwarf army & I had an elven one.

Used to get white dwarf and we'd go to the nearby Games Workshop to battle others.

Problem i had was the painting. I think they missed a trick on that as they could charge a lot more for 'bespoke' painted armies.

If you cant paint but like playing then you turn up in the store with terrible paint jobs its a bit embarassing. I ended up paying people to paint for me lol

I won an actual painting (big one with a frame!) after battling over a weekend which my mate dragged me out for. He then moved into 40k with space marines which seemed boring compared with the fantasy creatures.

Pretty much stopped after that. I wonder if theyre offering painting services now as that really put me off not getting more into it.

They don't do painting services. There shouldn't be any hate for badly painted figures. Anyone that does can gtf. The whole point is to enjoy playing or painting! I've seen some terrible paint jobs being used to play with but no one cares!

Why doesn’t it surprise me that you wouldn’t have an army of fully grown men

I don't collect any of the things or minis but read the books, am I part of this very exclusive club?

Also thinking of what 40k book to read after I finish the Eisenhorn omnibus in the next few days. Recommendations anyone?

As Nymz said, the Gotrek and Felix books are excellent. I love the Nightlords Trilogy by Aaron Dembski Bowden and, though I haven't read it yet, I heard the Talon of Horus is great

I'll add that to. Currently gonna take a break from 40k books as they're all huge and I have some other stuff I want to read, but will go back to it. So far I've liked Abnett's Horus Heresy the most as a next big series of books/omnibuses (omnibusi?) to read.

Assume Talon would, chronologically, be after the heresy anyway?

Yep, and the Nightlords Trilogy deals with some of the (not immediate) aftermath of the heresy from Nightlords perspective.

I'm not a big fan of the Siege of Terra books. Not Abnett's fault, but the sheer size of the heresy series left him with too many needless strands to tie up
