Watches

Like anything more expensive. A mercedes or BMW could be seen as vanity when you could have a dacia. I don't think it's always true, though. With watches, there is the appreciation of the complications and the movement used in the watch. Like a petrol head appreciating the engine of a car.
True to a point, the main issue is all a watch does is tell the time.....

I have an ancient Doro mobile, on a £10 monthly top up from EE. Just calls and texts, nothing else.

I know people who upgrade their mobiles every couple of months, but I have no interest, but good luck to them.

I have had a passion for wristwatches since I was a teenager, but back then could only afford a basic Timex.

Many of the watches we discuss here are relatively cheap, and not much snobbery.

What is on your wrist mate?

I have seen a few and some look nice, but as you say charging up must be a pain.

I'm old school, so it's a nice ticker for me, retired now, so this is on my wrist, most days.

As previously stated my most expensive purchase at £250.

Hi All, Need some advise. Anyone have a Panerai? I had one years ago but sold it as it was just too large (the dome) didnt sit under shirts etc. I do however love them and now seen a Panerai Due, which is much smaller in height. Any one seen these first hand?

Haven't seen them first hand, but the Due, particularly the 38mm version, is considerably smaller and wearable. Only 11.2mm in height (picture from the Hodinkee review below), so all in all it seems very much a scaled down version of the typical 44mm watch. I love these models, particularly the 38mm (which will look larger because of the square case) and would jump at one if I had the spare $$.

I just think it's amusing that people justify spending thousands on something cos of 'the mechanism ' and its not just to impress their mates

Perhaps some do, but pretty much none of my mates, or the general public for that matter, notice or care about what watch I'm wearing. If I wanted to impress my mates, I'd find a more noticeable way to do it.

I like collecting and looking at small shiny mechanical (and sometimes quartz) time-keep devices, no matter the price, and talking about them with others. It's a hobby.

Yes have tried one on, and was very impressed. My mate has 47mm historic one and while I really like the look of them that one and most of their range is just too big for my taste when on the wrist.
Was sent a mail shot from them the other week for their new 40mm gold number;

When I tried on the Due they brought out a limited “dealer special” (Bond Street flagship store) which was 40mm gold with a California dial, really nice.

Thanks. That looks lovely but I am just not a fan of the gold on watches. Just personal prefernce. Am looking at the Due with the blue face. Need to get to see one.

Just for the record old bean... Some of us still wear good ol' fashion pocket watches!

You know, put on our vintage 3 piece suit, walking cane, spats, cuff-lings, the whole nine yards...
And then wind up our watch, set the time, attach it to our vest and head out about the town for another day of debauchery and shenanigans! 🤪

Lol, did anyone ever buy one of those Nintendo game watches in the late 80's?

They're are apparently worth a shiny penny if you've still one in mint condition! 🤯
