Watches

Worse things to be addicted to mate.

I have stopped at 6 timepieces now.

Most I have spent on a watch was £250.
@RufusCat

We're all in a different state of addiction, whether it's # of timepieces, cost or both. This is my collection, although it's missing 2 pieces (my EDC's).

Tread carefully and never buy a watch as some sort of investment...at best you'll get lucky and make a little; hopefully you break even but, mostly, you'll lose a little or A LOT. Buy what you like, I'm a spec geek so that's the baseline I work off and where, IMO, everyone should start (learn watch specs to decide what's important to/for you!). After that, it's how my mood is as far as type or style. I have no brand loyalty although I'm partial to Breguet for historical reasons, despite not owning one for obvious reasons; but it seems fashionable in certain circles to 💩 on them these days. As you can see, I don't own many quartz pieces as I focus on mechanicals due to having an engineers brain.

Congrats on your Seiko...solid pick. ;)

And just to clarify...my collection is just starting. I was originally a vintage pocket watch collector. Wristwatches are my other halves fault. I was doing perfectly fine until she acted on an idea.

Happy Hunting.

As I have a significant birthday approaching I had the idea to buy myself something, perhaps a watch, and then I saw the Watches thread on GOT, which I hadn’t noticed before. I thought it might be a good place to get some hints and tips before I opened my wallet. Must say I have become hooked on the thread, now having read the first 110 pages, very impressed with the knowledge that is shared, and the obvious passion for the subject that is evident. As a result I am just in the process of buying a watch based on the 3 factors that are important to me – moderate size (I have fairly thin wrists), blue dial, and Arabic numerals. I have now made my first watch purchase, that meets all 3 criteria – a Seiko 5 sports watch. It is a cheaper buy than I first intended but the main thing I have learned from the thread is to buy what appeals to you, within your budget. The problem I may have is whether I have caught the bug - I will find out after the watch arrives and if I then want another one! You may have infected yet another innocent Blue!
A perfect start. A well made respected make. ;) ;)

Which Seiko 5 did you get? They're very versatile looks wise due to the ease of strap change.

I'm a big Seiko fanboy but have managed to hold off buying too many as I can cover a lot of looks by using different styles of strap.

It's model no is SRPG39K1. It comes with a leather strap but I fully intend to buy other straps which will change the look of the watch.

Sent mine off to Ernest Jones to get a battery replacement. Mid August that was. Got it back today.
I bought a nice Precista off TZ UK about 15 years ago and watched a jewellery shop in London do their best to mangled the case back trying to do a battery change so bought the tools to do it myself. I'm now buying bits from AliExpress and putting together my own watches. Give it a go,if I can do it anyone can.

Still find myself going back to my LumTec Combat B53 'Max Darkness' even though it's quartz. Although it can be tough to quick-glance the time off at times because of the colour scheme on the dial, it's built like a brick 💩 🏠 and keeps excellent time and now that I've got it off their included NATO (way too stiff, went with the ColaReb Firenze Grey leather one 👍) that sealed it. I may be a stan for big date functions too, I've come to realize. They can be hit or miss with some of their designs, like all watch makers, but I think you'd dig them as your field watch of choice if you did find one you like @verreauxi . Usually limited runs and great warranty too, for those of us in the States...although I've yet to have to make use of it.
