Watches

Disappointed I missed this thread .. was about to start one and thought to look.. so yeah

Been YouTubing watches almost very night since March.. how they work, which brands, 2nd hand v new etc etc... I had an itch some years ago after seeing an Omega Speedracer and fell in love. But I just couldn’t justify the expense... so ended up buying the cheapest Tag (formula 1) I could find.. it looks great (love sporty rubber straps) but didn’t satisfy the itch.

So back in the market for another.. justifying by saying I have 2 boys as well..

After all that research I have narrowed down to the new Omega Seamaster 300m.. but also love the aqua terra. The Rolex Explorer would be awesome too but that Omega has the wow factor and the mechanism is years ahead. Can dress it up and dress it down... stunner! I have skinny wrists though so not sure it’ll suit me.. that’s where the aqua terra I think had more size options.

Newer ones are made by Swatch essentially.

I messed up big time. Been watching the seamaster for years. I should have bought it last year when the new model was introduced. Older model went down to £2200 new... Slipped up there.

Watches are funny things, they seem to breed like rabbits. I started off years ago with a Seiko Pogue and as birthdays and anniversaries have come and gone now I've ended up with twenty plus. I've got a Deepsea but end up wearing a G shock solar more often than not.

The new one as well? Thought it was in the 42mm only... I know the pre 2018 version (which is also a stunner) I think also comes in 38mm or 39mm.....

New models with the horizontal waves only come in 42mm (except for one chronometer that is 43.5mm). If you're gonna drop that kind of money, then go with the watch that speaks to you; consider your lifestyle: if you spend 80% of your time in "jeans and trainers" (so to speak) then don't worry about having a watch that can dress-up or dress down because you mostly dress-down. You can always put the Seamaster-Diver on a black leather strap and it will look plenty "dressy," but in general diving watches aren't considered "dressy." That said, don't worry about conventions: I assure you 99.99% of people won't care/notice what you have on your wrist, so buy something that only speaks to you. I never understood the idea of watches as status/wealthy symbols.

Also, note that all watches are poor investments: this SMP will not go up in value and won't hold its value. The watch you are looking at is already about 1000USD less on the grey market than its original cost, and I reckon you could get it used on a reputable watch site for cheaper. So buy it to enjoy, to keep, and to give to one of your sons.

And my opinion is that the diver you're looking at is more interesting than the Aqua Terra (though the blue dial ATs are quite nice--I have a pic of a AT chrono a few pages back). And once you get a watch, you can have fun, at very reasonable cost, with different straps.
