Watches

I’m coming up on a service anniversary at work and am thinking of getting a nice watch. I’ve never spent more than $100. I like the look of some of the Longines watches. Do they have a good reputation? Also, I like the look of the Frederique Constant moonphase watches. Seems that we have a lot of informed folks here. Any insight would be appreciated.

At work so can't give you an adequate response (just came on to check transfers!). If nobody replies by the time I get home, I'll do my best to confuse you by asking you a few questions first. :hayee:

Longines are excellent choices at the price they are at. If you like the aesthetic of them, then I would certainly go for one.

Not sure on Frederique Constant, but I believe them to be a very decent proposal and every one loves a moonphase.

I've got a henge and that keeps perfect time down to the nearest epoch and no snot nosed punk kid is gonna make me change.
I never wear a watch. Now I'm retired, I don't often need to know the time. Somewhere, I have a very nice Garrard gold watch which I got from Unilever for 15 years service. No sure where it is though.

Ahh, sorry @wm02 ...forgot about this.

Don't get caught up in a name, first off...research these topics to find out why they might (or might not) be important to you...because most of it's subjective:

In-house vs. 3rd party movements
Mechanical vs. Automatic vs. Quartz movements (to find out about advantages/disadvantages such as maint. cost/accuracy)
Window Material (plastic vs. mineral vs. sapphire)
Horological History of Maker (if you care)
Swiss Made vs. Not
Movement Caliber (ie. which version of a movement)
Beat rate (bit of a niche topic)

Then decide what you want out of it/plan to do with it...daily wear vs. dress, pass it down at some point possibly etc. and go from there.

You'll blow your own mind with all the variables but most importantly, you'll spend your money wisely, whatever you plonk down. You might find that watch you're currently looking at now isn't such a great deal and costing you more in name alone.

Buying a watch at the end of the day comes down to what you think is beautiful and worth the money you pay for it.

Most watches will keep the time relatively well (as you would expect) so it's about setting a budget and getting the one that speaks to you and your personality in that price range. I was going to pay around 1300 for a quartz watch I liked the look of and I ended up paying 1850 for a mechanical one thinking if I was going to go in I may as well go all in and have something that isn't so closely related to a casio for the cash.

The mechanical watches are fairly chunky though (thickness) and some find them too large so it is important to get down to a jewelers to try before you buy. I then shopped for it on the interweb after checking the fit as it was 2.5k in the shops.

Exactly that.

(If you're buying it to be 'flash' you're clearly a bit of a bell.)

My current state of the collection (3 watches). All photos are taken by me.

The first watch is Longines HydroConquest automatic. I got this one as a gift for uni graduation last year. I use it as my everyday watch. The second is a well-known Seiko SARB035. It is a strap monster and my go-to dress watch. The last one is a GSHOCK CasiOak, which was a birthday present from my girlfriend. Imho, the perfect "beater" watch.

Funny enough, while the first two are much more expensive than the 3rd one, I am pretty sure I will never swap that one out of the collection. While there are better diver and dress options at higher prices, I cannot seem to find a better beater watch than CasiOak.

Wearing my 35 right now! If there's a better value for money watch then I don't know what it is. I love mine.

I bought myself a Longines watch must be the guts of 7 or 8 years ago after i done well with a bit of work, as always wanted a nice watch. Bit of a long story short about 6 years ago on a night out in Spain as was living over there at the time, i was totally hammered had no money for the taxi home and ended up giving my my watch to taxi driver instead of the fare (Fare was less than a 10 euro, watch was over £2k at the time), he was either bringing me to the cops or to fill me in, would have taken a few slaps looking back. To punish myself i never bought a replacement.

Thought Longines we're a great make and loved that watch although plenty of nice ones to chose from if thinking of buying a watch, not qyuite mine but pretty close to mine is below.
