Watches

This one just arrived from Japan today. Been waiting for its release since about May.

The new Citizen Series 8, model 830. This has a lattice dial with a mother of pearl disk underneath. It's hard to capture the dial, but it is both subtle and not-subtle depending the light. The movement is a new in-house movement by Citizen (they are among the most vertically integrated manufacturers, along with Seiko and Rolex--they make all the parts for their watches and they also make the machines to make the parts). There are three new "series 8" watches, but this one is the most unique...so it may not be for everyone.

I made a little .gif to try and get the dial variations but it didn't really work:

A good review of the watch is here:

I don't have much to add to the review, but I would say that Citizen could have put more thought into the caseback, even some engraving/insignia (or better yet, a see-thru, would go a long way). Also, the bracelet has those old "Omega-style" push-pins to remove the links, which feels a bit antiquated...I would have much prefered screws.

That said, the dial is a stand-out for me, and the case has a great geometry to it, with different levels of polished and brushed finish.

That’s stunning mate. Lovely choice.

I wouldn't have seen you going the Citizen route! That being said, I wouldn't have seen Citizen going that route either (ie. new mechs)! Looks like they don't want to sink in Seiko's sand when it comes to the 1k+ market. That's good, though...they need someone poking them in the mech market, other than the Miyota 9015 segment.

I'll have to look for some YouTube reviews to see how that dial pops in real time. You've nerded out a little and gone a bit niche here, nice! I wonder if the movement's labeled as Citizen or Miyota? I mean, they're one and the same but you know how that goes sometimes (Seiko/Grand Seiko).

Definitely a niche piece. And a bit out of my usual orbit to be sure. I believe they are not marketing this as Miyota as far as I can tell.

They're new enough that I had to go digging a bit and I still don't know if there's confusion/misinformation or what...the caliber 0200 is inside some pretty pricey pieces; apparently they all have a display case back too and possibly the eagle symbol...see Citizen's video below, it starts at what I'm talking about.

The other thing is, the video below calls it a Miyota movement (0950) but all of Miyota's current "premium" automatic movements start with a 9 (9015, 9100 etc).

Maybe they're just going to be a low production number of Citizen branded movements just below the 0200. No matter, either way it's a great choice as I don't think you'll see many around; your avg watch purchaser doesn't associate Citizen with mech movements, mainly their Eco-Drive stuff that the market's flooded with (hell, my Pro Diver is one)...which is unfair.
