I really don't understand the hype around former great footballers being discussed as possible great football managers.
I look at the top managers over the years and most had mediocre playing careers.
There are exceptions but some of these exceptions went to manage it clubs with big transfer budgets This is no guarantee of success but it does help.

At least Rooney is learning his trade the hard way and seems to be doing a good job in almost impossible circumstances.

Not advocating for us getting him in but he’s done an amazing job this year at derby with a squad that is a mix of kids and older pros that where scrambled together.

Maybe in a few years after more experience he may become an actual possible manager for us.
He’s done well with what he’s got available but he’s almost in a no-lose situation there. It’s relatively easy to squeeze a bit of fight out of a ragtag bunch of players who pretty much know they’re down anyway.

Our problem for a while is that we have a disparate group of players, some of whom have taken a step down from bigger clubs and have no drive to prove themselves, no loyalty to the club or its fans and probably clauses in their contracts to prevent them personally from having to slug it out in the Championship.

I don’t think Rooney will make a good manager ever, based on nothing but my own instinct. When we’re talking about the manager we need that has to steer THESE players out of THIS situation then it defo isn’t him. Seems like it isn’t Rafael either, but then the few in the world that might be capable (I have no names) would almost certainly not want to be within a million miles of our calamity club.

We’ve reached peak, unsolvable, Rubiks Cube Everton (yes, Rubiks Cubes are unsolvable I don’t care to argue the matter).

I actually think most great managers were at least very good players. Exceptions stand out, but the likes of Ancelotti, Guardiola and even Ferguson outnumber the numpties. Even Brian Clough was a very good player.

I'm not sure that's true you know?

A lot of top players would get more chances I suppose.

I remember hearing about Alan Ball from someone I think when he was at Southampton and he struggled to manage his team because he couldn't get his head around how his players were not as good as he was.

Yeah, but then you have guys like Zidane, Jupp Heynkes, Trapattoni, Cruyff...
