Transfer Rumour Wayne Rooney

As others have mentioned, Mata, Rashford and Martial would all be better signings for us than Rooney at this stage in time if we're buying from United

The big reason to sign Rooney is that it'd be a world recognised player whose name we could put on shirts and make some decent money, but he's not the sort of player we need starting for us every week

He's not coming to Everton to sit on a bench for less money than he's on right now

If he wants to go to Russia in 2018 as an England player, then he's going to have to play regularly, and do we want him playing regularly in place of the likes of Lukaku, Barkley, Lookman, Davies etc?

Great though it would be to see him wear the shirt again, he's probably going to want more money and minutes than we're prepared to offer him

If he's willing to take a substantial cut in his wages and be back up for Rom, then I'd happily have him here. If he wants a decent wedge and to be in the starting XI, then I'd have to seriously question that deal
What if the plan is to offer him game time? We will hopefully have more games to play next season with europa if we get there so potentially with a half decent cup run before christmas we could have 10 extra games, 12 with a qualifier for europe. Perhaps the idea of rotating the squad and changing tactics based on the team we play as well brings Rooney in more as it would do McCarthy, Besic and Calvert Llewin.

It's exactly where I am with the situation. Let's be honest, he's not going to take a 70% pay cut to come here is he? He'll be demanding something close to what he's on now. He's Wayne Rooney let's not forget, he hasn't cared about Everton for over a decade.

United are going to pay him off according to todays rags.

If he's chasing the money we won't be staying in the UK come the summer.

He'd have to want to make the move and the compromise would be the money, we'll see how it pans out.

It may have been 18 months ago, but in ferguson's testimonial, when rooney came on, you could see the difference in his play from that, to how he plays for Utd.

He was operating on a completely different wavelength to any of our players on the pitch at that time.

He may not look it with Utd these days, but we would definitely see it for us.

I'd be more inclined to believe that it's simply a motivation issue if he'd ever been one for looking after himself, but he hasn't. The fat get even got himself on the bifters in Vegas as preparation for the 2010 World Cup.

Everton will get all they deserve if they decide to offer a record-breaking contract to the Ricky Hatton of football.

Only want him playing on merit and that would go for every player in the squad

As you said...18 months ago which will be 2 years ago when he signs and in a friendly match.

Its not remotely comparable.

I'm not as down on his ability as others seem to be

He'd be fine as an option off the bench, the issue is he'd want to

A - play more than that

and

B - be paid more than a player in that role would normally be paid

I'm not doubting that he could still be a useful player for us, as I think he still has something to offer, it's other factors that put me off

I loved Rooney and was gutted to see him go, and him coming back to Everton would be nice to see, but the terms have to be right

If utd let him go for free, what we would have paid for him can go to a signing on fee or just be converted into wages so we could theoretically get up to 250/300k per week.

Basing that on if include how much we would have paid anyhow (around 100-125k) + the 15 million that we could have expected to pay utd that we don't if he becomes a free agent, divided by 104 weeks for a 2 year deal = just over 144k.

A + B = 244k or 269k if we pay 125k per week. Or as i like to put it more money than any single person should ever get for kicking a bag of air around a park.

The way he played in that cameo, was nothing like how he has played for Utd in years.

He drove with the ball, and looked to get on the end of everything because he was desperate to score.

I believe he'd play exactly like that again for us if he was to sign.

For whatever reason over the past 3/4 years hes either been told to drop further and further back, or he just can't be bothered.

I get the impression he's been uninterested at Utd for a long time.

Someone posted the article a few pages back.. but it is on the BBC website as well... United want to pay up his contract to get him off the books as they are super confident of getting greizman in the summer. ... but I think the stipulation is that he is a free agent only if he moves to another English club... so all the signs are he is coming back...

thanks mate ;)

Id say it was more because it was a testimonial and nobody was that bothered.

Other than him being 2 years older people will be running around and stuff in proper games.

If he needs motivating to play, regardless of the situation or the player then i don't want them anywhere near us.

I think the other side of the coin is that perhaps Rooney would want to come here and sit on our bench? everyone is assuming he wants to play at the highest level and get first team action every week and this would be a reason not to/he wouldn't want to sign for us.

Except he might be content with that? He has won everything in the game domestically, he can retire a United great so has broke scoring records for both club and country. Perhaps he might be looking at things now and thinks that sitting on our bench and being a squad player at his boyhood club is how he wants to end his career now? He has nothing left to prove, nothing left to win, probably doesn't need to earn any more money neither so none of these things could really factor into his decision. When the chance to pull on the blue shirt again no matter how irregular it might end up being is the lure he wants at 30?

It'll be funny come the summer. A lot of people (and the club) who have been kissing his arse will be feeling silly when he bins us off to chase the money. Again.
