I reckon he's been made aware that we're looking at other targets, and now he's stuck in a purgatory where no one wants him but he's still contracted to United for 2 years on £300k a week, so he's playing it as safe as possible to avoid the humiliation of ending up in the MLS.

Looks like Everton hold all the cards here. I'm sure Koeman wouldn't mind him for some depth going in to the EL but I would imagine the club are saying free transfer, 100k p/w and no guarantee of game time.
United want him off the books and he doesn't want to leave the north west.
Not sure if I want him or not. Would be sad to see him getting savaged by the street end if he puts in a string of dire showings.
