Hopefully that means we won't be in for him.
Why would we want to be his second choice again?

You think Mourinho is going to bow to his demands? LOL. He'll keep him on the bench on £300k a week before he gives in to player power.
Do you not think he has a board of directors to answer to mate? He will be asked if Rooney is in his plans - if not get rid.
Then he'll just tell them he wants to keep him for the squad, as they'll have loads of games or something. This is Jose Mourinho we're talking about, he's more than happy to cut his nose off to spite his face in order to show he's boss.
Don't know about the last few weeks, the last 18 months he's 'looked way out of his depth'. As you said sentiment shouldn't come into it.Personally, I think our interest in him has cooled and he's been made aware of this, therefore he's issuing a "please keep me" plea to United because he knows he doesn't have us waiting with open arms like an old flame. The past few weeks he's looked way out of his depth in the games United have used him in, Koeman and Walsh will surely have noticed this and will have hopefully decided that he's not worth it after all, that going abroad and looking for someone younger is the better option.
Still wouldn't be at all surprised if we see him rock up back here in the summer but at least now we know it's not a certainty. Hopefully sensibility and not sentiment wins out.
Possibly, didn't really show John Terry who was boss when he was getting him sacked at Chelsea though.
Actually that was precisely his downfall, benching Terry and having him turn the whole squad against him. In the battle of wills, Terry obviously won because he had the whole squad behind him, but Mourinho never backed down.
