2017/18 Wayne Rooney

...yep, he was like a Quarterback in American Football. I just love watching the fella, always have done. He has that rare ability that only some have that makes it look like he wears carpet slippers to play. I agree with you but I still think he needs to be used sparingly.

The ‘hit’ for that goal was so special, he cut down on the ball like a golfer does to drill it low below the wind. He didn’t try and strike it hard but it flew pure and straight. It was an Excotet.

I'd liken the way he played last night to the way Pirlo played for Italy, in essence the footballing equivalent of a quarter back.

Sometimes it'll work, other times it won't.

If this is going to be his new role, we'll need to have patience, as he won't get as much space with most teams as he got lost night and it won't always work as well.

Extra special in the context of the game, in the context of our season even. Losing that 2-0 lead would have been devastating and we were wobbling badly second half. Then Pickford saved the pen and that opportunity fell to Rooney - having the bottle to crack it first time, straight down the middle under that pressure is what sets him apart. He can give the ball away trying to do too much - the challenge for the new manager is to let him do what he does well and have others pick up responsibility elsewhere on the pitch.

He was put in a position yesterday where his lack of pace was covered by the legs of Davbies and Gueye (who incidentally probably had the best game i can remember from him - as he stayed very very disciplined and ACTUALLY provided genuine cover for the back line for once)

Would that work against say a team that presses the life out of you, i have serious doubts, but against a hell of a lot of teams - that could be a starting position for him without disrupting other players positions ahead (Gylffi especially)

Exactly what I posted last night he looked great there, and his goals were a bonus - he has not got the ability as a back to goal forward anymore, and he filled in everywhere deep !
The hat trick was handy too;)

Good point this. His talent is still there, but his style in a deeper role will work better against sides who don't press heavily (like West Ham).

I wonder if David Unsworth regrets not playing him in that deeper midfield role from the start of his stint in charge. I think he just might still be in THE job if he had.

Notwithstanding the standard of the opposition I think last night for the first time looked as if the team knew what it was doing and supposed to do. The second goal was a great team goal and some of the football was good to watch.
There is a fragility there still but that is only to be expected after the last three months it will take time for confidence to build. I thought Rooney worked very well covering in front of his back four at times.

Just a guess, but I think he`s been played up front every game apart from last night, due to our woeful lack off attacking options.
Possibly last night was a lucky gamble that paid off and may continue to work in the future.
He certainly steadied the defence by last night, helping out, his intelligent use of the ball ( rather than hoofing it )and linking the defence with the midfield / starting attacks, which is something that`s been terribly lacking all season .

It has been pointed out by many that Rooney could play the deeper role in his sleep , I am a little surprised it wasn't used before instead of playing in a position that he no longer had the legs for and was crowding Sigurdsson for the same space on the field.

He was fantastic last night but he will face much tougher tests than Kouyate and Obiang.

It's how his midfield partners react to tougher foes to protect and feed Rooney which will be key in the upcoming games.

And Rooney needs to improve against those teams who sit very deep and narrow- as we all saw in the Euros last year vs Iceland.

Would get run off the park playing like that v Liverpool or Spurs. It will work in home games against certain opposition but I don’t think it’s a Eureka moment.
