2017/18 Wayne Rooney

I always see him as an AMC or wide forward, at CM position only when defending with 1 or 2 DM behind him.

Playing him too deep will make him do a lot of agonizing slow moving holywood balls to the right forward/wing back like he used to pass to Valencia at United.

He also lacks the ball retention and ball winning skill to be a good CM imo. His defending skill is average at best, and he gets dispossessed rather easily.

He's a goalscoring playmaker, he should play behind the striker for me. He will drop deeper from there when defending anyway as we all know.

I know that he has other deficiencies for a more forward positions, such as pace and agility, but he will also get into the box quicker to score goals. I think it's still better than having to endure a lot of his long balls from deep, and have him near the defenders most of the time.

I think playing him in deep midfield will diminish rather than increase his influence on the match, he should not play just in front of the defenders.

He should be on the ball as much as possible. If he has to move around the pitch to get to where the ball is the most, that's where he should play.
I think the problem with Rooney is that he is too indisciplined to play in certain positions. And I actually think it's his own desire to make up for lost time that makes him that way. The guy want's so much to succeed.

Problem is, when we play him up top, he drops deep looking for the ball, leaving the midfielders with no outlet in addition to getting in the way of other players. When he is played out wide, again he's always drifting inside looking for the ball. This leaves his full back exposed in addition to encroaching on other players.

I've therefore come to the conclusion that we need to play him inside, where he will see more of the ball anyway. So either at the front of a midfield 3, or in the middle should we play 4231. I'd also rest him frequently to keep him sharp, maybe 1 in 3. That was our problem with Barry and has been the issue with Baines this season. They need adequate rest.

He needs to be playing behind the number 10. Gueye should be sitting ahead of the back 4, and get another player, preferably somebody creative, alongside Rooney. I see a 4-1-2-2-1 formation as our way forward. Imagine Giroud and two wingers in those attacking positions.

Pickford
Coleman
Keane
Somebody else at CB
Baines
Gueye
Rooney
Sigurdsson
Bolasie
Somebody else on the wing
Giroud

Just leave him next to Gana for now. He's too easy to pick up when he starts further forward or out wide, and despite his long passing being quite erratic, he's the only one capable of quickly turning defence into attack.

It's hardly the type of thing I'd be looking to build around long-term, but options are extremely limited at the moment.

I would like to see him in the quarter back role in front of the defence. He works very hard defensively anyway and can take the ball out from defence and use it better than anybody around.
He would be able to control the tempo of our game as Darron Gibson did so well for a while after he first arrived.

any penalty taken that isn't dead hard into the corner can be considered not a great pen, I mean paneka's look boss but if the keeper stands there and catches it it's a terrible penalty,

Fair play, he's on for over 15 goals in the league this season. I don't think many of us thought that'd be possible for him when he joined.

What managers has he played for? Moyes, SAF, LVG, Jose, Sven, Southgate (?), that Italian nutter, er, Peter Taylor (?), Mclaren. Prob missed some off. edit. Woy.

Anyrate, what price his final one being Sam?
